Arrivals and Departures in 1901.
Registrar-General's Office, Wellington, 10th February, 1902.
TABLES showing the numbers of arrivals in and departures from New Zealand during the year 1901, with totals for the previous nine years by way of comparison, are published for general information.
The arrivals in the colony last year (25,086) greatly exceeded the number recorded in 1900 (18,074), and similarly the departures during 1901, which numbered 18,564, were more than those in the previous year—viz., 16,243.
The excess of arrivals over departures last year was 6,522, against 1,831 in 1900. These totals, however, include 1,582 officers and men of the Contingents sent to South Africa in 1900 and 1,178 in 1901, which qualify somewhat the comparisons, and the numbers exclusive of those troops are accordingly given.
DEPARTURES IN 1900 AND 1901, EXCLUDING CONTINGENTS FOR SOUTH AFRICA.

|---|---|---|---|
| 1900 | 16,243 | 1,582 | 14,661 |
| 1901 | 18,564 | 1,178 | 17,386 |

| Year 1901 | .. | .. | 7,700 |
Omitting the military who left for war purposes only, the results for 1901 are still more satisfactory than those for 1900, the gain for last year exceeding the other by 4,287 persons.
The comparative tables show that the colony has drawn to itself in each of the ten years 1892 to 1901 more population than it has parted with—a sure indication of prosperity.
The figures under the heading “United Kingdom” for 1901 show an excess of 1,411 arrivals over the departures, for Australia an excess of 4,705, and for other countries 406.
Of the 25,086 persons who came to New Zealand last year 2,420, or 9·65 per cent. of the total, were children—i.e., under twelve years of age; and of the 18,564 departures the children numbered 1,441, or 7·76 per cent.
