erected on the extreme outer end of Point Arguello, sea-coast of California, about twelve miles to the northward and westward of Point Conception.
The light illuminates the entire horizon. Its focal plane is 91 ft. above mean high water, and the light may be seen 15½ miles in clear weather.
The light is shown from a square wooden tower rising from the fog-signal building and surmounted by a black lantern. The woodwork is painted white with lead-coloured trimmings.
Approx. position : Lat. 34° 34' 28" N., long. 120° 38' 53" W.
A fog-signal will be established later, of which due notice will be given.
CHINA.
Yangtze Kiang Entrance.—“Tungsha” and “Kiutoan” Light-vessels.—Caution.
Notice is given that the masters of the lightships “Tungsha” and “Kiutoan” complain that the safety of these vessels, and of the lives of all on board them, are frequently endangered by both men-of-war and merchant steamers passing recklessly near them, the names of such that have recently passed within about 50 ft. of them being given. All vessels are therefore hereby cautioned against attempting to cross the bows of these lightships on the strength of the ebb or flood tide at any distance under ½ mile, and requested not to pass them nearer than 150 yards under any circumstances.
JAPAN.
Shimonoseki Strait.—Lightbuoy marking Shoal southward of Manaita Beacon.
With reference to Notice to Mariners No. 14 (378) of 1901, further notice is given that a lightbuoy has been placed to mark the shoal which lies 1,100 yards S. 16° E. true (S. by E. mag.) from Manaita beacon.
This buoy, named Takase lightbuoy, is a conical iron buoy painted red, with upper part made of lattice-work, surmounted by the lantern. It shows an intermittent white light every 6 seconds—light 4 seconds, eclipse 2 seconds.

SIGNAL-STATION AT NUGGET POINT.

NOTICE is hereby given that a flagstaff and Lloyd’s signal-station has now been established at Nugget Point, from which vessels may be reported and their wants telegraphed.
The position of the flagstaff is on the ridge, and at the back of the lighthouse, elevated about 450 ft. above sea-level, and can be seen from all positions seaward.

Bonus on Mineral Oil produced from Shale obtained in New Zealand.—Further Extension of Time.

THE time for notifying intention to claim the under-mentioned bonus, and for making such claim, has been further extended as follows:—
Notice of intention to claim the bonus must be given in writing to the Colonial Secretary not later than the 30th June, 1901.
The claim must be made before the 31st December, 1901.

Bonus on Mineral Oil produced from Shale obtained in New Zealand.

NOTICE is hereby given that a bonus will be paid for the production of mineral oil under the following conditions:—

A bonus of 1s. per gallon (£5,000) will be paid on the first 100,000 gallons of mineral oil produced from shale obtained in the Colony of New Zealand, the oil to be of a quality approved of by Government, and to be sold at a price not exceeding 1s. a gallon at any port of shipment in the colony.

Notice of intention to claim the aforesaid bonus must be given in writing to the Colonial Secretary not later than the 31st December, 1899.

The claim must be made before the 30th June, 1900.

The first claimant who proves to the satisfaction of the Government that he has fulfilled all the conditions to be the recipient of the bonus.
-
The other conditions—as to quantity, priority, quality, and value—to be fulfilled to the satisfaction of an officer appointed for the purpose by the Government.
