No. 13530.—9th April, 1901.—ALFRED LINDSAY, of Wellington, New Zealand, Boot-importer. Improvements in the means for securing boots to the feet of the wearer.
Claim.—In means for securing boots to the feet of the wearer, a boot constructed with a front and back part, to the front part of which (one on each side thereof) is secured a pair of straps of unequal length, the shorter strap being connected to a buckle, in combination with a loop formed in the back of the boot through which both the straps are passed in opposite directions, and with a loop in the front of the boot through which the longer strap is passed, as and for the purposes set forth.

No. 13531.—9th April, 1901.—CHARLES STEPHEN DUNNINGHAM, of Lambton Quay, Wellington, New Zealand, Watchmaker. Improvements in brooch-pins, and in the manner of securing the same to brooches.
Claims.—(1.) In brooch-fastenings, a circular walled recess secured to the back of the brooch and provided with an opening in the edge thereof, in combination with a pin one end of which is turned into a loop adapted to pass through the opening and fit between the sides of the recess, and with means whereby such loop may be secured within the recess, as specified. (2.) In brooch-fastenings, a circular walled recess secured to the back of the brooch and provided with an opening in the edge thereof, and a pair of arms hinged behind the recess, and which are adapted to lie one on each side thereof, the front ends of which are joined together by means of a plate, such plate being adapted to partially close the opening in the edge of the recess, as specified. (3.) In brooch-fastenings, a pin one end of which is curved downwards and then upwards into a circular loop, such loop being adapted to fit in and be secured behind the walls of a circular recess upon the back of the brooch, as specified.

No. 13534.—12th April, 1901.—HARRY WALKER ABBOTT, Mechanical Engineer, of 414, Winchester Avenue, and THOMAS INLOW PORTER, Officer of the United States Secret Service, of 166, Adams Street, both in Chicago, Illinois, United States of America. Machines for counting coins, discs, &c.
Claims.—(1.) In a coin-counting machine having an ejector and an automatic register, a register-actuating device initially set by the action of the coin as it is being ejected, and thereafter moved positively by the mechanism, to actuate said register, as described with reference to the drawings. (2.) In connection with the subject-matter of above claim, a positively driven roller for insuring a correct discharge, and coacting with the ejector and with the mechanism for initially setting the register-actuating device, as described with reference to the drawings. (3.) In connection with the subject-matter of first claim, means for imparting to the ejector a relatively slow working stroke, as described with reference to the drawings. (4.) The combination with the ejector of an upwardly movable coin-tube having its base adjacent to the upper surface thereof, and having its rear lower edge concaved to admit the passage of upwardly bowed coins, or coins of unusual thickness, as described with reference to the drawings. (5.) The combination with the coin-tube and ejector of a base-plate or bottom beneath the coin-tube and over which the ejector slides, longitudinally recessed to admit the discharge of downwardly bowed coins, as described with reference to the drawings. (6.) In a machine of the character described, arranging the base-plate or bottom to which the coin-tube delivers, and over which the ejector moves, at an inclination, sloping upwardly and rearwardly, so that the coins may tend to gravitate to the front, as described with reference to the drawings.

No. 13535.—12th April, 1901.—GEORGE HAMILTON GRAPES, of Paraparaumu, Wellington, New Zealand, Fruit Specialist. Improvements in hoes.
Claims.—(1.) In a hoe having its blade set at an angle to its socket, an angular-shaped root to the socket, substantially as set forth. (2.) In a hoe, barbs formed on the edges of the socket, in combination with a ring for forcing the barbs into the handle, substantially as set forth. (3.) In a hoe having its blade set at an angle to its socket, an ear formed at the rear point of the blade to throw the soil away from plants and assist in preventing lateral travel of the hoe, substantially as set forth. (4.) In a hoe having its blade set at an angle, in combination, a socket placed nearer the front point of the blade than the rear point, an ear on the rear point of the blade, barbs on the edges of the socket, and a securing-ring for forcing the barbs into the handle, substantially as set forth. (5.) The combination and arrangement of parts comprising my improvements in hoes, substantially as set forth, and illustrated on the drawing.
