Two beacons, obelisks, 30 ft. high, are est. at the head of Taitam Bay: a. Front beacon in 22° 14′ N., 114° 13½′ E., with Tweed Islet summit S. 13° W., 1½ miles, and 302-ft. hill N. 85° W. b. Rear beacon N. 3° W., 9½ cables from the front beacon. These beacons in line N. 3° W. lead 600 yds. wrd. of Castle Rk., and 1,400 yds. wrd. of Beaufort (Lochau) Isl. Dec.

Formosa Banks.—A sounding of 4 fms. is reported to have been obtained in approx. 22° 49¾′ N., 118° 20¾′ E., on the banks, though the exact position would appear to be a little doubtful. At 4 miles S. by W. from the 4-fm. sounding, a depth of 7½ fms. was obtained with deeper water between. Dec.

Yang tse Kiang Entr.—Caution.—The Kiutoan Lt.-V. has sustained numerous collisions through vessels, mostly steamers, trying to cross her bows without making due allowance for the strength of the tide; and the crew of the Lt.-V. state that their lives are frequently imperilled by steam-vessels passing dangerously near, when there is no reason why they should not keep at a safe dist.

North Chan.—From an exam. recently made of the Shaweishan, or N., chan. into the Yang tse, it would appear that no very extensive alteration has taken place in the depths, or configuration of the banks, as represented on Admiralty Chart No. 1602, corrected to Aug., 1900, as a depth of from 19 ft. to 20 ft. at L.W. can be carried across the bar. To facilitate crossing the bar in the deepest water two additional red conical buoys have been laid out: 1. An outer bar buoy, named Shaweishan Bank buoy, surm. by a staff and globe, in 20 ft., in approx. 31° 22½′ N., 122° 14½′ E., with Shaweishan Lt.-H. N. 9° W., 2³⁄₁₀ miles. 2. An inner bar buoy, named Chi Yao Bank outer buoy, surm. by a staff and cage, in 23 ft., in approx. 31° 24′ N., 121° 56′ E., with Drinkwater Pt. Lt.-H. N. 58° W., 7¹⁄₁₀ miles. 3. The Fairway buoy, in approx. 31° 24′ N., 121° 59½′ E., now the middle bar buoy, is red, and surm. with a staff and ball. To cross the bar in the deepest water, vessels should pass close srd. of the above-named buoys. Tidal Information.—In order to inform vessels approaching the bar what water they may expect in crossing it, a tide-gauge has been est. on Shaweishan Isl., and the height of the tide in ft. above the 20 ft. depths in the chan. will be sig. by the International Code to any vessel asking for this information. Tsung Ming Crossing.—Also, the Swashway, now named Tsung Ming Crossing, with a depth of 26 ft. at L.W. springs, and a width of 2 cables, between the N. and S. chan., N.-wrd. of Tsung Ming Bank, has been buoyed as follows: a. E. entr. buoy, conical, black, surm. by a staff and globe, moored in 39 ft., in approx. 31° 30¼′ N., 121° 33′ E., with Middle Isl. beacon S. 29° E., 5¹⁄₁₀ miles. b. First Crossing buoy, conical, black, surm. by a staff and cage, moored in 29 ft., with Middle Isl. beacon S. 43° E., 6¹⁄₁₀ miles. c. Second Crossing buoy, conical, black, surm. by a staff and triangle, moored in 26 ft., with Middle Isl. beacon S. 55° E., 6½ miles. d. W. Spit buoy, conical, red and black, vert., surm. by a staff and globe, moored in 30 ft., with Middle Isl. beacon S. 67° E., 7¹⁄₁₀ miles. Directions.—Vessels bound to Shanghai through the N. chan., after passing Liu Chiao Lt.-H., should keep the coast of Tsung Ming Isl. about one mile dist. until the E. entr. buoy is sighted, when the course should be altered to pass about one cable to the nrd. of that buoy, and after passing the same dis. to the nrd. of the other three buoys in the crossing, stand over towards the S.-wrn. bank of the Yang tse until about mid-chan., when a course may be shaped either up or down the river. Caution.—Allowance must be made for the flood tide, which sets to the N.-wrd. across the Swashway, especially between the E. Entr. and First Crossing buoys. Dec.

Pacific Ocean.

Santa Cruz Group.

Vanikoro IslS.—Tévai Bay.—The following information has been received respecting Tévai and Manévai Bays: a. A sounding of 9 fms. was obtained when entering Tévai Bay, in approx. 11° 40′ S., 167° 0½′ E., with Astrolabe Pt. S. 23 W., 21 cables, and Dillon Head S. 79° W. b. Manévai Isl. and Mangrove Isl. are now joined together, the former space between them being filled with full-grown mangrove-trees; the leading-mark, N. pt. of Manévai Isl. in line with S. pt. of Tévai Isl., is no longer available. New Caledonia.

Alcméne Chan.—A rk. about 130 yds. long and 50 yds. broad, carrying 3¾ fms. at L.W. springs, lies in approx. 20° 11½′ S., 164° 13′ E., in the middle of the chan. Dec.

Suvarov (Suwarrow) Isl.

A reef carrying 2¼ fms. lies in approx. 13° 13′ S., 163° 9′ W., in the entr. to the Suvarov Lagoon, with the Lt.-H. S. 78° W., 3 cables. Dec.
