to the nrd., being the deeper and more intricate. The ern. chan., which lies between Nos. 5 and 7 buoys, was, however, the one generally used. In it the depth is about 20 ft. at H.W. The note on the Admiralty chart has therefore been amended.

Mauritius.

Port Louis Lt.-V.—From 1st to the 30th June, 1900, this Lt.-V. (20° 8¼′ S., 57° 28¼′ E.) at the entr. to the port is to be replaced by a Lt.-V. exh. 3 white lts. in the form of a triangle at her masthead. June.*

INDIAN OCEAN.—BAY OF BENGAL.

MANAPAD Pt.—A group-fl. white lt., showing 2 fls. every 10 secs., elev. 140 ft. above H.W., R. 18 miles, is to be exh. from a white Lt.-H. now in course of constr. on Manapad Pt. (8° 22½′ N., 78° 3½′ E.). On the exh. of the new lt. the present F. red lt. will be disc., and its Lt.-H. removed.

KRISHNA Lt.—A group-fl. white lt., showing 2 fls. every 10 secs., elev. 140 ft. above H.W., R. 18 miles, is to be exh. from a white Lt.-H., now in course of constr. in 15° 47′ N., 80° 59′ E., between False Pt. Divi and Pt. Divi. On the exh. of this lt., Divi Pt. lt. (F. white) will be disc., but the Lt.-H. will remain as a landmark.

MASULIPATAM RIVER ENTR.—An occ. white lt., elev. 33 ft. above H.W., R. 11 miles, is to be exh. from a white Lt.-H., to be constr. in 16° 9′ N., 81° 10′ E., on the coast just nrd. of the river entr. On the exh. of this lt. the F. white lt. now exh. from a flagstaff at Masulipatam will be disc.

PACIFIC OCEAN.

Samoa Islands.

SAVII ISL.—MATAATU HARB.—H.M.S. “Torch,” on entering Mataatu Harb., passed over a bank of small extent, on which a depth of 7 fms. was obtained, in approx. 13° 25′ S., 172° 21¼′ W., with the church S. 22° E., about two miles. Aug.

Tonga Islands.

FALCON SHOAL.—With reference to prev. notices, further information has been received that the shoal to which Falcon Isl., in approx. 20° 18¾′ S., 175° 25′ W., has been reduced is now showing above water at its nrn. end. Aug.

Alterations to the Scale of Fares, Rates, and Charges in Force upon the New Zealand Government Railways.

IN pursuance of all powers and authorities enabling me under “The Public Works Act, 1894,” and any amendment thereof, and also of “The Government Railways Act, 1894,” I, Joseph George Ward, the Minister for Railways, do hereby make the following alterations in the scale of fares, rates, and charges in force on the New Zealand Government railways open for traffic, such alterations to come into force on and after the 1st day of October, 1900:—

PART II.—LUGGAGE, PARCELS, HORSES, ETC.

Hounds, the property of hunt clubs, conveyed on the outward journey by rail, will be returned free of charge from the original destination station to the original forwarding station on production of a certificate in the following form, signed by the master of the hunt, certifying that the hounds took part in the hunting meeting:—

I hereby certify that the (a) , consigned by me for conveyance by rail to , were on the outward journey conveyed by rail from to on , and that I am entitled to have them carried back free on the return journey.

(a) Insert number of hounds. (b) Name of hunting meet.

The return journey must be made within two weeks of date of outward journey.

When hounds are sent to the hunt in trucks with hunters they must be returned in same manner, otherwise ordinary rates will be charged for the return journey.

PART III.—GOODS REGULATIONS.

(40.) CANTERBURY JUBILEE EXHIBITION.

Exhibits consigned for exhibition at the Canterbury Jubilee Exhibition to be held at Christchurch, commencing on the 1st November, 1900, will be carried free on the New Zealand Government railways, provided that they shall be so carried at the sole risk of the consignors, and that each package shall be consigned to the Secretary of the Exhibition, and legibly marked, “For exhibition at the Canterbury Industrial Exhibition, Christchurch.” Loading and unloading must be done at the expense of the consignors. In the event of such exhibits being sold the full railway charges must be paid.

Exhibits returning will be conveyed free, provided no sale or exchange has been effected. A certificate to this effect, signed by the Secretary of the Exhibition, must be produced before the goods can be received for transit free of charge.

PART IV.—GOODS: LOCAL RATES.

WESTLAND SECTION.

Coal consigned from Reefton to Greymouth for shipment will be charged Class Q, including all charges.

PART V. — CLASSIFICATION OF GOODS, LIVESTOCK, PARCELS, AND LUGGAGE.

The maximum weight of any package containing fish shall be 2 cwt. Packages of fish exceeding 2 cwt. will not be accepted for carriage.

PART VI.—WHARVES.

GENERAL.

No vessel shall discharge or take in live-stock at any railway wharf on Sundays except in cases of extreme urgency, and the captain or agent of the vessel shall give the railway Stationmaster at the port at least two hours’ notice in writing of the intention to load or discharge the stock, and must, before the loading or discharging is commenced, obtain the written consent of the railway Stationmaster thereto, and all such cases shall be reported by the Stationmaster to the District Manager.

TRINITY COLLEGE, DUBLIN.

Arts Studies.

THE University of Dublin is prepared to recognise the arts studies of the following colonial and Indian universities, and such others as the Board and Council may from time to time direct to be added to the list: The Universities of Adelaide, Allahabad, Bombay, Calcutta, Cape of Good Hope, Madras, Melbourne, McGill (Montreal), New Brunswick, New Zealand, Punjab, Sydney, Tasmania, Toronto.

Any student producing the proper certificates that he has passed two years in arts studies at such universities, or has passed the examinations belonging to that period, will be entitled to put his name on the College books as a senior freshman, a student with one year’s credit; with this reservation: that, if the course of arts which he has pursued does not include all the subjects of the junior freshman year, the Senior Lecturer may require him to qualify by examination in the omitted subject or subjects within one month after his name has been entered on the books.

Furthermore, the Senior Lecturer was authorised by the Board, upon due inquiry, to admit students who have passed the matriculation examination of the University of Cape Colony without further examination.

Medical Studies.

The Board, on the recommendation of the Medical School Committee, have adopted the following resolutions (13th January, 1900):—

“That, in medical schools recognised by the University of Dublin, two consecutive anni medici, taken at any period during the four years of the medical curriculum, be recognised as qualifying for admission to the examinations of the School of Physic.”

“The medical schools which the Board and the School of Physic are now prepared to recognise are,—

“In India—Madras, Bombay, Lahore, Calcutta.

“In Australia—Melbourne, Sydney, Adelaide.

“In Ceylon—Colombo.

“In New Zealand—Otago.

“In Canada—Montreal (McGill), Toronto.

“In Tasmania—Hobart.”
