CHINESE.—Chinese are included in the population given above. The number in New Zealand on 31st December, 1899, was estimated to be 3,263, of whom 33 were females.

REMARKS.—Excluding Maoris, the population of the colony increased by 13,042, or at the rate of 1·75 per cent., during the year. To this increase, excess of births over deaths contributed 11,155, and excess of arrivals over departures 1,887. The birth-rate for the colony in 1899 was 25·12 per 1,000 of mean population, and the death-rate 10·24, as against 25·74 and 9·84 respectively in 1898.

The number of births registered in 1899 (18,835) was actually less than in 1898 (18,955); and so, with the increased population, the rate per 1,000 for 1899 is considerably lower.

The deaths in 1899 (7,680) exceeded the number registered in 1898 (7,244) by 436, and thus increased the rate per 1,000 from 9·84 to 10·24.

The number of marriages (excluding those contracted between Maoris) solemnised in 1899 is estimated at 5,430, giving a rate of 7·24* per 1,000 of the mean population, against 5,091 and 6·91, the actual number and rate in 1898.

The fluctuations of the birth-, death-, and marriage-rates for the last twelve years are as under:—

Per 1,000 of Population.
Birth-rate. Death-rate. Marriage-rate.
1888 .. .. 31·32 9·43 5·97
1889 .. .. 30·07 9·44 5·94
1890 .. .. 29·44 9·66 6·12
1891 .. .. 29·01 10·35 6·04
1892 .. .. 27·83 10·06 6·23
1893 .. .. 27·50 10·23 6·22
1894 .. .. 27·28 10·19 6·15
1895 .. .. 26·78 9·91 5·94
1896 .. .. 26·33 9·10 6·85
1897 .. .. 25·96 9·14 6·83
1898 .. .. 25·74 9·84 6·91

"The Agricultural and Pastoral Statistics Act, 1895."—Interim Return, 1899–1900.—Notice No. 585.

Department of Agriculture, Wellington, 30th January, 1900.

THE attached tables show the areas under grain crops, and the estimated yield of wheat, oats, and barley “for threshing,” also the quantity of wheat on hand at 30th November, 1899.

Wheat. Oats. Barley.
Acres. Estimated Yield. Total Bushels. Acres. Estimated Yield. Total Bushels. Acres. Estimated Yield. Total Bushels.
265,349 29 7,695,121 395,975 36 14,255,100 46,877 33 1,546,941.

Bushels.

In New Zealand Gazette of 14th July, 1899 (No. 61), the wheat on hand, available for all purposes, as from 28th February, 1899, was stated at .. .. .. 13,308,214

This has been disposed of as follows:—

Bushels.
For seed, 265,959 acres, at 2 bushels per acre 531,918
Consumption for population of 790,000, at 6 bushels, for 9 months 3,555,000
Wheat and flour exported from 28th February to 30th November, 1899 2,718,803
————
6,805,721
Leaving on hand at 30th November, 1899 6,502,493

The amount, however, returned as on hand at that date is 4,863,145 bushels, leaving a deficit of 1,639,348 bushels. It is evident the wheat on hand, unthreshed, has been largely under-estimated, in addition to which a considerable quantity was damaged, both in stock and stack, and in all probability much of this has not been returned.

JOHN D. RITCHIE,
Secretary for Agriculture.
