THE NEW ZEALAND GAZETTE.
[No. 60
The following figures will show how the wheat-crop, 1898–99, was disposed of :—
In the New Zealand Gazette of 14th July, 1899 (No. 61), the wheat available for all
purposes as from 28th February, 1899, was .. .. .. .. .. 13,308,214 bushels.
This has been disposed of as follows :—
For seed, 265,959 acres at 2 bushels per acre .. .. 531,918 bushels.
Consumption for population of 790,000 at 6 bushels per head
for 9 months .. .. .. .. .. 3,555,000 "
Wheat and flour exported from 28th February to 30th
November, 1899 .. .. .. .. .. 2,718,803 "
———
6,805,721 "
Leaving on hand at 30th November, 1899 .. .. .. 6,502,493 "
As already shown, there is a shortage in the returns of 1,466,120 bushels. This is no doubt accounted for by the fact that
a large quantity of the wheat was unthreshed at date of returns, therefore only an estimate could be given ; besides, a
considerable quantity has been damaged in stock, and no doubt liberal allowance has been made for such.
Oats : For threshing there were 398,243 acres—a decrease of 10,077 acres. It is impossible to arrive at the quantity
of old oats on hand, but from all appearances the market is bare. The demand in South Africa has afforded an outlet for
a large quantity at fairly remunerative prices.
Barley : There were 48,003 acres of this crop—an increase of 2,332 acres over last year.
Maize : This crop showed a decrease of 1,110 acres.
Peas, Beans, Linseed, Hops, and other Crops : The acreage is less, but of no great extent.
Rye-grass : The area under this heading for seed is as follows :—
Land ploughed .. .. 37,564 acres.
Land not ploughed .. .. 1,979 "
———
39,543 acres at 25·12 bushels per acre .. .. 993,184 bushels.
Seed on hand at 15th November, 1899 .. .. .. .. .. 304,214 "
———
Available for disposal, 1899–1900 .. .. .. .. .. 1,297,398 "
The acreage for this crop is less than last year by 26,752 acres.
Cocksfoot : The area under crop is as follows :—
Land ploughed .. .. 9,978 acres.
Land not ploughed .. .. 44,740 "
———
54,718 acres at 165 lb. per acre .. .. 9,026,906 pounds.
Seed on hand at 15th November, 1899 .. .. .. .. .. 999,786 "
———
Available for disposal, 1899–1900 .. .. .. .. .. 10,026,692 "
There is a large increase in the acreage under this crop both in land ploughed and land not ploughed ; they total an
increase of 8,443 acres.
Potatoes : There is a decrease of 1,620 acres in this crop, and the yield is less—6·0 tons as against 7·73 tons.
