*The remaining suburbs do not lie within borough boundaries, and particulars respecting them have not been obtained for the Vital Statistics.

Deaths occurring at hospitals, of persons not residents of the borough wherein the hospital is situated, have been allotted in each case to the borough where the disease was contracted, and not to that in which the death actually took place.

The total births in the above boroughs amounted to 396, against 367 in April—an increase of 29. The deaths in May were 181—a decrease of 8 on the number in April. Of the total deaths, males contributed 95, females 86. Fifty-four of the deaths were of children under five years of age, being 29·83 per cent. of the whole number; 47 of these were under one year of age.

There were forty-five deaths of persons of 65 years and upwards: Four men, 66 (two), 71, 84, and four women, 66, 70 (two), 77, died at Auckland; four men, 65, 68, 69, 70, and three women, 66, 70, 71, at Wellington; five men, 69, 70 (two), 81, 85, and eleven women, 65 (two), 67, 68, 70, 71, 74, 76, 78 (two), 88, at Christchurch; and eleven men, 68, 69, 74, 75, 77, 79, 80, 81, 82, 88, 89, and three women, 66, 68, 87, at Dunedin.
