Deaths occurring at hospitals, of persons not residents of the borough wherein the hospital is situated, have been allotted in each case to the borough where the disease was contracted, and not to that in which the death actually took place.

The total births in the above boroughs amounted to 427, against 367 in February—an increase of 60. The deaths in March were 185—an increase of 29 on the number in February. Of the total deaths, males contributed 116, females 69. Fifty-five of the deaths were of children under five years of age, being 29·73 per cent. of the whole number; 50 of these were under one year of age.

There were thirty-one deaths of persons of 65 years and upwards: Four men, 65, 70, 78, 89, and six women, 70, 75 (two), 80, 81, 84, died at Auckland; five men, 65, 66, 69 (two), 70, and two women, 72, 88, at Wellington; two men, 66, 90, and one woman, 79, at Christchurch; and eight men, 67, 70, 71, 73 (two), 75, 76, 80, and three women, 66, 74, 78, at Dunedin.

THE following Table shows the Causes of the Deaths of Persons of both Sexes under 5 Years of Age and 5 Years and upwards, and the Proportion per Cent. of Deaths from each Cause, in the Boroughs above given, registered during the Month of March, 1900.
