Notice of Acceptance of Complete Specifications.

Wellington, 4th January, 1900.

COMPLETE specifications relating to the under-mentioned applications for Letters Patent have been accepted, and are open to public inspection at this office. Any person may, at any time within two months from the date of this Gazette, give me notice in writing of opposition to the grant of any such patent. Such notice must set forth the particular grounds of objection, and be in duplicate. A fee of 10s. is payable thereon.

No. 11564.—22nd April, 1899.—ARTHUR HENRY BOWELL, of Brighton Road, Parnell, Auckland, New Zealand, Chemist. An improved glazed earthenware house-block.*

Claims.—(1.) In an earthenware house-block, a hollow in the block, a bolt-hole in the top of the block, and a hand-hole in the block, substantially as set forth. (2.) In an earthenware house-block, a hollow in the block, a slot in top of the block, and a hand-hole in the block, substantially as set forth. (3.) The improved house-block, constructed and arranged substantially as set forth.

No. 11615.—12th May, 1899.—CHARLES FELTON SCOTT, of 6214, Sellers Street, Pittsburg, Pennsylvania, United States of America, Electrical Engineer. Improvements in systems of electrical distribution.*

Claim.—The arrangement for supplying three wires with proper three-phase currents from two pairs of leads supplied with alternating currents in quadrature from a polyphase generator, substantially as described with reference to the drawing.

No. 11678.—6th June, 1899.—BENJAMIN GARVER LAMME, of 230, Stratford Avenue, Pittsburg, Pennsylvania, United States of America, Electrical Engineer. Improvements in systems of electrical distribution and regulation.*

Claims.—(1.) The combination with a dynamo or rotary transformer supplying current to a distributing system of a direct-current generator for varying the excitation of the dynamo or rotary transformer, said direct-current generator being driven by an electric motor included in the distributing system, substantially as described. (2.) The modification of the invention in which the electric motor, and direct-current generator driven thereby, are replaced by a rotary transformer, substantially as described. (3.) The systems of electrical distribution arranged and operating substantially as described with reference to Fig. 1 or to Fig. 2 of the drawings. (4.) The modification of the invention applied to systems of distribution of alternating currents with rotary transformers wherein the exciting generator is driven direct from the shaft of the transformer, substantially as described with reference to Fig. 3 of the drawings.

No. 11691.—8th June, 1899.—THOMAS STEEL PERKINS, of Idlewood, Pennsylvania, United States of America, Electrical Engineer. Improved starting-mechanism for electric motors.*

Extract from Specification.—“My invention relates to starting-mechanism for electric motors, and has for its object to construct an improved device for direct-current motors, the field-magnets of which are either shunt or compound wound, the structure and operation of the parts being such that the movement of a resistance-varying arm serves to operate a double-pole switch to either open or close the line-circuit according to the direction of said movement. I furthermore provide means, which act automatically when a current larger than a predetermined maximum passes through the armature of the motor, to short-circuit the magnet which normally holds the resistance-varying arm in position when all the resistance is cut out. By this means, when an overload occurs, the resistance-varying arm, being released under the influence of a spring, rapidly moves back, introducing resistance into the circuit, and finally breaks the circuit through the double-pole switch.”

Claim.—A starting-device for electric motors constructed and operating substantially as described with reference to the drawings.

Claims.—(1.) A rotary transformer or synchronous motor having the inner ends of its field-magnet pole-pieces provided with either conducting shields or rings, or both, for the purpose specified. (2.) The improvements in rotary transformers and synchronous motors described with reference to the drawings, for the purpose specified.
