Section 5, Block VIII., Tiriraukawa, is situated in the Te Kapua Block (Palmerston North Knights of Labour), on the Wairepu Road. The access is from Mangaweka, which is about ten miles distant via the Makohine–Mangaweka and Te Kapua Roads, which are formed as bridle-track to the section; the section is also accessible from Hunterville, distant about twenty-two miles—seventeen miles a dray-road (Watershed Road), the rest (Murray’s Track and Wairepu Roads) are formed bridle-tracks. The section comprises, generally speaking, hilly bush land, with occasional small flats. The soil is of good quality, resting on papa formation. The forest is fairly heavy, comprising rimu, matai, rata, tawa, rewarewa, &c., with a thick undergrowth of the usual kind. The section is fairly well watered by small streams.
Section 25, Block XVI., Maungakaretu, is situated in Sommerville Block, on Murray’s Track. The access is from Hunterville, which is about thirty-three miles distant—by a dray-road twenty miles, and pack-track thirteen miles—or from Taihape Township, which is seven miles distant by dray-road and pack-track. The soil is of good quality on the bush land, but poorer on clearing, resting on papa formation, which shows here and there on the ridges. The forest is mixed, comprising chiefly kahikatea, rimu, matai, maire, hinau, &c., with an undergrowth of rangiora, mahoe, &c. The section is well watered. The elevation is 1,800 ft. above sea-level.
Section 14, Block XII., Hautapu, is situated in the Marton No. 1 Block. The access is from Rangiwahia, which is about ten miles distant via the Rangiwahia, Mangaweka, Lagoon, and Titirangi Roads, which are formed for dray traffic for about seven miles, the rest is formed bridle-track to the section. The section comprises rough hilly land, with a few small flats; the frontage is rough, and no building-site near the road. The soil is of good quality, resting on papa formation. The forest is rather heavy, comprising chiefly rimu, hinau, matai, maire, &c., with a thick undergrowth of the usual kind. The section is well watered by streams.
Section 12, Block IX., Mangahao, is situated on the eastern slopes of the Tararua Ranges, with a frontage to Taonui Road. The access is from Pahiatua, which is about fourteen miles distant, thirteen and a half of which is metalled road, remainder rough walking-track. The section may also be approached from Tutaekara or Makakahi Railway-stations, by part metalled, part horse-track, &c., distant about nine miles. The section comprises hilly land with sharp spurs and steep gullies, covered with mixed forest with the exception of about 65 acres, which have been felled and grassed, covered in places with secondary growth. The soil is of fair quality, resting on sandstone formation. The forest is mixed, comprising rata, rimu, birch, &c., with a thick undergrowth of supplejack, konini, makomako, ground-fern, &c. The section is well watered by watercourses in gullies. The elevation ranges from about 1,000 ft. to 1,400 ft. above sea-level. The improvements comprise felling and grassing, 65 acres, at £1 10s. per acre, £97 10s.
As witness the hand of His Excellency the Governor, this twenty-fourth day of October, one thousand eight hundred and ninety-nine.
