THE following Notices to Mariners, received from the Hydrographer to the United States Navy, Washington, D.C., are published for general information.
WM. HALL-JONES.
(769.) BRITISH COLUMBIA.—VANCOUVER ISLAND.—SOUTH-EAST COAST.—BUOY OFF CELIA REEF.
A STEEL can buoy, painted red, has been established in Shute Passage, and is moored in 9 fathoms of water 250 ft. S. 18° W. true (S. ½ E. mag.) from Celia Reef.
Approx. position: Lat. 48° 42′ 50″ N., long. 123° 23′ 20″ W.
One hundred feet S. 23° W. true (south mag.) there is a depth of 12 fathoms; 300 ft. (same bearing), 17 fathoms; and 600 ft. (same bearing), 24 fathoms.
There is no 4-fathom patch southward of Celia Reef, as shown on the charts, the least depth between the buoy and the reef being 6 fathoms.
British Admiralty charts (issued to U.S. vessels): Nos. 2689 and 2840. H. O. Publication No. 96, The Coast of British Columbia, &c., 1891, page 88.
(770.) BRITISH COLUMBIA.—VANCOUVER ISLAND.—TRINCOMALI CHANNEL.—BEACON ON DANGER REEF.
A conical wooden beacon, 25 ft. across at the base, surmounted by a lattice-work ball, 6 ft. in diameter, the whole painted black, and showing 40 ft. above high water, has been erected on the north end of the easternmost rock of Danger Reef, in the channel between Valdes and Vancouver Islands.
Approx. position: Lat. 49° 3′ 40″ N., long. 123° 42′ 42″ W.
The two rocks, visible at low water, are parallel to each other, and 200 yards apart. The more easterly rock, on which the beacon stands, is awash at high water; the western rock dries only at low tide.
The beacon should not be approached within 600 yards, the ground being foul around the reef within that distance.
British Admiralty charts (issued to U.S. vessels): No. 579. H. O. Publication No. 96, The Coast of British Columbia, &c., 1891, page 108.
(771.) BRITISH COLUMBIA.—GEORGIA STRAIT.—PORTIER PASS.—UNCHARTED ROCKS.—ROMULUS ROCK.—FURTHER PARTICULARS.—WARNING TO NAVIGATORS.
July 12, 1899, the Dominion Government steamer “Quadra,” Captain John T. Waldran commanding, grazed on an uncharted rock in Portier Pass, between Valdes and Galiano Islands, Georgia Strait.
The rock, which has 9 ft. of water on it at low tide, with 7 fathoms alongside, lies 392 ft. outside low-water mark, on the Galiano Island or south shore of the pass, with Race Point well open of the prominent point next to the westward.
Approx. position: Lat. 49° 0′ 42″ N., long. 123° 35′ 15″ W.
Romulus Rock.—Further Particulars.—With reference to Notice to Mariners, No. 28 (568) of 1893, Captain Waldran reports that Romulus Rock should be marked with 2¾ fathoms, as the steamer “Lorne,” drawing less than 17 ft., touched on it at very low tide. It lies on the south side of the western entrance to Portier Pass, in a position from which Black Rock bears N. 35° W. true (N.W. by W, ¼ W. mag.), distant about 600 yards.
