In the first table are given the deaths and death-rates for each of the four cities, for the suburban boroughs severally and for each city with its suburban towns. As regards Auckland and Christchurch, the whole of the area usually recognised as suburban has not yet been brought under municipal government, and the vital statistics do not deal with such portions as still remain in road districts. But the omission is not very important, for there are in either case quite enough suburbs included within borough boundaries to give a fair idea of the death-rate of Greater Auckland and Greater Christchurch. As further boroughs are formed the vital statistics will be made to include them.

The inclusion of the suburban boroughs tends to lower the rates at Auckland, Christchurch, and Dunedin.

Death-rates per 1,000 of Mean Population.

Auckland City .. .. .. .. .. .. 1·12
" and five suburban boroughs .. .. .. 0·98
Wellington City .. .. .. .. .. .. 0·89
" and three suburban boroughs .. .. .. 0·89
Christchurch City .. .. .. .. .. .. 1·44
" and four suburban boroughs .. .. .. 1·33
Dunedin City .. .. .. .. .. .. 1·49
" and eight suburban boroughs .. .. .. 1·27

Including the suburbs, the rate at Christchurch is the highest, and at Wellington the lowest.

Compared with August, 1898, the results are,—

1898. 1899.
Auckland and suburbs .. .. .. .. 0·98 0·98
Wellington and suburbs.. .. .. .. 1·29 0·89
Christchurch and suburbs .. .. .. 1·19 1·33
Dunedin and suburbs .. .. .. .. 1·21 1·27

Specific Febrile or Zymotic Diseases.—The deaths at the four centres from these diseases were the same number in August as in July—viz., 12. There had been no less than 40 deaths in May. Measles caused 2 deaths at Dunedin in August, and influenza 1 at the same town; whooping cough, 2 at Auckland; diphtheria, 1 at Christchurch; and typhoid fever, 1 at Wellington.

Constitutional Diseases.—Of 40 deaths in this class at the chief towns and suburbs, 23 were from phthisis, and 13 from cancer. The mortality from these two diseases was 17 per cent. of the total deaths from all causes.

Local Diseases.—Of 118 deaths, 26 were from diseases of the nervous system, 28 of the circulatory, 28 of the respiratory, 19 of the digestive, 2 of the lymphatic, and 15 of the urinary systems.

Violent Deaths.—There were 9 accidents and 1 suicide at the chief cities with suburbs. A female hotelkeeper was run over by a vehicle at Wellington; a boy was killed by falling from a ladder, a girl accidentally burned, a locksmith found drowned at Christchurch; three militiamen lost their lives at Mahanga Bay by an explosion of gun-cotton; an infant died of umbilical hæmorrhage in Wellington, and another at birth in Dunedin. The suicide was that of an engineer, who shot himself, at Auckland, while temporarily insane.
