REGISTRAR-GENERAL’S Report on the Vital Statistics of the Four Chief Towns of New Zealand for the Year 1898:—

RETURN of the Number of Births, with the Actual Mortality of Males and Females, and the Proportion of Births and Deaths to Population, in the under-mentioned Boroughs, during the Year 1898.

*The population of Auckland has not been arrived at by a calculation similar to that adopted in case of the other towns, as the necessary data were not supplied.

†The remaining suburbs do not lie within borough boundaries, and particulars respecting them have not been obtained for the Vital Statistics.

Deaths occurring at hospitals have been omitted, except where deceased had previously resided in one or other of the above boroughs, in which case the death is counted against the borough of residence.
