In the first table are given the deaths and death-rates for each of the four cities, for the suburban boroughs severally, and for each city with its suburban towns. As regards Auckland and Christchurch, the whole of the area usually recognised as suburban has not yet been brought under municipal government, and the vital statistics do not deal with such portions as still remain in road districts. But the omission is not very important, for there are in either case quite enough suburbs included within borough boundaries to give a fair idea of the death-rate of Greater Auckland and Greater Christchurch. As further boroughs are formed the vital statistics will be made to include them.

The inclusion of the suburban boroughs tends to lower the rate at Auckland and Christchurch, but raises it at Wellington and Dunedin. The rates for October are,—

Death-rates per 1,000 of Population.
Auckland City 1·15
" and five suburban boroughs 1·00
Wellington City 0·99
" and three suburban boroughs 1·00
Christchurch City 1·16
" and four suburban boroughs 0·96
Dunedin City 1·16
" and eight suburban boroughs 1·23

Including the suburbs, the rate at Dunedin is the highest and at Christchurch the lowest. Compared with October, 1897, the results are,—

October, 1897. October, 1898.
Auckland and suburbs 0·66 1·00
Wellington and suburbs 0·96 1·00
Christchurch and suburbs 0·90 0·96
Dunedin and suburbs 1·06 1·23

Specific Febrile and Zymotic Diseases.—Deaths from this class of disease at the four centres and suburbs were 14 in October, being the same number as in the previous month. Measles was fatal in Wellington, where 2 deaths occurred; at Christchurch, where there was 1 death; and at Dunedin, 1 also. Influenza caused 1 death at Wellington; diphtheria 1 at Auckland; and typhoid fever 1 at Wellington. Deaths from diarrhoeal diseases were 4—1 at Wellington and 3 at Dunedin.

Constitutional Diseases.—Out of a total of 42 deaths, 25 were from phthisis, 8 from cancer, 4 from tubercular meningitis, and 1 from diabetes.

Local Diseases.—Of 101 deaths, 24 were from diseases of the nervous system, 1 from diseases of organs of special sense, 17 from diseases of the circulatory system, 36 of the respiratory, 9 of the digestive, 11 of the urinary, 1 of the reproductive systems, while 2 were caused by diseases of the organs of locomotion.

Violent Deaths.—Three were accidental, 5 suicidal. A ship’s steward was killed by a fall from a breastwork at Auckland; a labourer by a fall of gear on board a steamer at Wellington; an infant from operation at birth at Dunedin. Of suicides, there were 2 cases by shooting—1 at Auckland and 1 at Wellington; 1 by cutting throat and another by hanging at Christchurch; and 1 by means of a dynamite cartridge at Wellington.
