HIS Excellency the Governor has been pleased to approve, under sections 46 and 50 of “The Defence Act, 1886,” of the dismissal of

No. 343, Private JOHN HOLLAND,

Awarua Rifle Volunteers, from the New Zealand Volunteer Force, he having been convicted of an assault, and sentenced to imprisonment by the civil power. Dismissal to date from the 15th September, 1898.

THE following notice, received from the Mayor of the Borough of Linwood, is published in accordance with the provisions of “The Local Bodies’ Loans Act, 1886.”

BOROUGH OF LINWOOD.—PROPOSED LOAN.

I HEREBY give notice of the result of the poll taken on the 20th day of October, 1898, on the proposal to raise a loan of £275 for defraying part of the cost of constructing a brick sewer in Tuam Street, in the Borough of Linwood; the security for the said loan being a special rate of ⅜d. in the pound, to be levied only within the Tuam Street Drain Special Rating District, as defined by resolution passed at a special meeting of the Linwood Borough Council, held on the 9th day of May, 1898.

The whole number of the ratepayers on the special roll is 59, entitled to exercise 59 votes: Number of ratepayers who voted in favour of the proposal, 38; number of votes given in favour of the proposal, 38; number of ratepayers who voted against the proposal, nil; informal votes, 1.

As a majority in number of the ratepayers on the special roll voted in favour of the proposal, and the number so voting are entitled to more than one-half in number of the votes which can be exercised by the whole number of ratepayers on the special roll, I therefore declare the resolution to be carried.

Result of a poll taken on the 25th day of October, 1898, on a proposal to raise a loan of £128 under “The Local Bodies’ Loans Act, 1886,” and amendments thereto, and “The Government Loans to Local Bodies Act, 1886,” and amendments thereto, for the purpose of constructing a road near Belmont:—

Number of ratepayers on roll, 6, representing 7 votes; number of ratepayers who voted in favour of the proposal, 6 representing 7 votes,

As the whole number of ratepayers representing the total number of the votes which can be exercised voted in favour of the proposal, I hereby declare the proposal to be carried.

To metal a portion of the Durham Road West from Section 153, Block VIII., Egmont, westwards. (2.) To borrow for such purpose the sum of £700 under “The Government Loans to Local Bodies Act, 1886.” (3.) To strike as security for such loan a special rate of ⅜d. in the pound. (4.) To constitute the “Durham Road West Special Rating District,” to comprise the following lands: viz., Sections 140, 141, 142, 143 (in two subdivisions), 144, 145 (in two subdivisions), 146, 148, 149, 150, 151, 152, 153, 154, 155, 156, 157, part 158, 185, 186, 187, 188, 189, Block VIII., Egmont; Sections 9, 10, 13; 14, 15, 16, Block VIII., Egmont; Sections 2, 3 (in two subdivisions), 4, 5, 6, Block XI., Egmont; Sections 1, 2, Block XII., Egmont:—

To borrow for such purpose the sum of £300 under “The Government Loans to Local Bodies Act, 1886.” (3.) To strike as security for such loan a special rate of ⅜d. in the pound. (4.) To constitute the “Lepper Road South Special Rating District,” to comprise the following lands: viz., Sections 121, 122, 123, 125, 126 (in two subdivisions), 127 (in five subdivisions), 147, Block IV., Egmont; Sections 138, 142, 143, 144, 145, 146, Block III., Egmont; Sections part 7, 8, 9 (in two subdivisions), 10 (in two subdivisions), 11, 12, 13, Block VII., Egmont:—

Total number of ratepayers on special roll, 23; total number of votes exercisable, 24: Total number of votes recorded for the proposal, 14; total number of votes recorded against the proposal, 2; total number of votes not recorded, 8.

I hereby declare the proposal carried.
