There are no restrictions or limitations as to the
number of sections which one person may lease, and no
declaration is required. Residence and improvements are
not compulsory. No compensation shall be claimed by the
lessees, nor shall any be allowed by the Government, on
account of any improvements effected by the lessee, nor for
any other cause. -
Possession will be given on the day of acceptance of
tender. -
The leases shall be for the term of years as specified
above, but shall be subject to termination by twelve months’
notice in the event of the land being required by the Govern-
ment. -
The rent shall be payable half-yearly in advance.

The lands are to be let for grazing purposes, and the
lessees will not be permitted to break up or crop any of the
same without the written permission of the Commissioner
of Crown Lands first had and obtained. -
The lessee shall use all reasonable means to prevent
the spread of gorse, broom, and sweetbriar on the land com-
prised in his lease.

Land in Aohanga Survey District, Wellington, for Sale by
Public Auction.

NOTICE is hereby given that the under-mentioned land
will be offered for sale by public auction for cash at
the District Lands and Survey Office, Wellington, on Wed-
nesday, the 7th December, 1898.

Weighted with £109 for improvements.
The above section is situated in the Dannevirke Centen-
nial Block, on the King’s Road. The access is from Rakau-
nui, which is about eighteen miles distant—viz., two miles
by the Alfredton-Weber Road; then for seven miles by a
formed horse-track down the Huia, Waikereru, and Wai-
owaka Roads; the other nine miles by the Spur and other
roads, which are being formed. The section comprises hilly
land, with homestead-site on King’s Road. The soil is clay
and sandstone, resting on a papa formation. The section is
under English grass, on which manuka scrub has grown up.
The section is not well watered. The elevation ranges from
about 700 ft. to 1,000 ft. above sea-level. The improvements
comprise—144 acres in grass, at 7s. 6d., £54; 110 chains post-
and-wire fence, at 10s., £55: total, £109.
Terms of Sale.—One-fifth of the purchase-money, together
with the value of the improvements, to be paid on the fall of
the hammer, and the balance, with Crown-grant fee, within
thirty days thereafter; otherwise the part of the purchase-
money paid by way of deposit shall be forfeited, and the
contract for the sale of the land be null and void.
There are no restrictions or limitations imposed on the
purchaser of this section other than above mentioned.

Small Grazing-runs, Hawke’s Bay, open for Lease upon
Application.
District Lands and Survey Office,
Napier, 29th August, 1898.
NOTICE is hereby given that the under-mentioned
small grazing-runs will be open for lease on applica-
tion at the District Lands and Survey Office, Napier, on
and after Wednesday, the 26th October, 1898, at the annual
rentals noted below. In case of more than one application
for the same run on the same day, priority of selection will
be decided by ballot on the following day, at 11 a.m.

Runs Nos. 37 and 38 are situated in the Rotokakarangu
Block, immediately north of the Mohaka River, and distant
about forty miles from Wairoa and twenty-eight miles from
Mohaka. On Run No. 37 there are about 5,600 acres of open
fern country, the remainder being mixed bush. About half
the run is undulating and level, the rest rather broken. On
Run No. 38 about 2,100 acres are open fern land, the
balance being bush. The soil on both runs is light pumice,
and they are well watered. They are accessible by means
of a pack-track from Wairoa.
Run No. 39 is bounded towards the north by the forest re-
serve adjoining the Waikaremoana Lake. It lies about thirty-
four miles north-west of Wairoa, and is accessible by means of
a road recently formed for dray traffic. It is forest country,
of an altitude varying from 1,500 ft. to 3,500 ft. above sea-
level, the level of Waikaremoana being 1,015 ft. The land
is rather rough, and broken by gullies, and the timber is
black-birch, miro, totara, silver-birch, white-pine, and rimu.
There is a little flat land, and a few spurs covered with
Maori grass. The land is well watered with numerous
streams, and well adapted for pastoral purposes.
Run No. 40 is undulating forest country, immediately
west of the Crown land recently taken up in the Nuhaka
North district. It is covered with mixed bush, consisting of
black-birch and other timber, and is well watered. The
soil is fair, and the land is well adapted for pastoral
purposes. It is accessible from Nuhaka Settlement, distant
twelve miles, by a road now being formed for horse traffic.
NOTE.—Run No. 40 is first-class pastoral country, and
Runs Nos. 37, 38, and 39 are second-class pastoral country.

grazing-run will be open for selection on Wednesday,
the 26th October, 1898.
If more than one application be received, then the order
of selection shall be decided by ballot on the following day,
at 11 a.m.

The character of the land varies from first-class bush
terraces and ridges to rocky faces and shingle-slides; about
1,000 acres open, of which about 350 acres are good tussock
and grass land, and the remainder steep, rocky land of very
little use. Of the bush portion 1,400 acres are of such a
character that it would pay for clearing and grassing; the
remainder is short scrub on steep faces. A good deal of the
bush is dead and partly cleared, through the operations of
the sawmill, the owner of which has also sown a good deal
of grass-seed, which has taken very well. The run is well
watered. Altitude, 450 ft. to 5,222 ft. Distance, about nine
miles from Kaikoura.
