Rural Lands in the Wellington Land District open for Sale or Selection.

RANFURLY, Governor.

IN pursuance and exercise of the powers and authorities conferred upon me by the one-hundred-and-thirty-sixth section of “The Land Act, 1892,” I, Uchter John Mark, Earl of Ranfurly, the Governor of the Colony of New Zealand, having received the report of the Surveyor-General in this behalf, as in the said section is provided, do hereby declare that the rural lands enumerated in the Schedule hereto shall be open for sale or selection on and after the twenty-second day of December, one thousand eight hundred and ninety-eight; and also that the lands mentioned in the said Schedule may, at the option of the applicant, be purchased for cash, or be selected for occupation with right of purchase or on lease in perpetuity, or, in respect of any land containing or supposed to contain any metal, mineral, or valuable stone, be selected on lease in perpetuity only; and I do hereby also fix the prices at which the said lands shall be sold, occupied, or leased, as mentioned in the said Schedule hereto, and do declare that the said lands shall be sold, occupied, or leased under and subject to the provisions of “The Land Act, 1892.”

SCHEDULE.
TARANAKI LAND DISTRICT.
Second-class Land.

The general character of this block consists of long spurs and slopes from 100 ft. to 1,200 ft. above sea-level. On the Urenui River are to be found several small flats, the heads of the streams being broken by gutters. The country is more or less broken; formation is papa; the soil good and well watered. The land is covered with heavy bush, consisting of rata, rimu, tawa, towai, pukatea, hinau, kahikatea, and soft woods, with usual underscrub; there is birch on some of the ridges. The grades of road-lines are generally good, not steeper than 1 in 15. Access is obtained on the north by Kaipikari Road, about six miles from Urenui Township, four miles being dray-road; also by Okoke Road, turning off Mokau Road to right, about three miles from Urenui, thence by Kaiwaru Road leaving Kohangamoa Road near bridge over Urenui River, about five miles from township: on the south, the Mataro Road, branching off the Junction Road (which latter is a metalled dray-road) about five miles from Tarata Village, will give access, continuing on to the Piko Road, which has yet to be opened.
