Rural Lands in the Taranaki Land District open for Sale or Selection.
RANFURLY, Governor.
IN pursuance and exercise of the powers and authorities conferred upon me by the one-hundred-and-thirty-sixth section of “The Land Act, 1892,” I, Uchter John Mark, Earl of Ranfurly, the Governor of the Colony of New Zealand, having received the report of the Surveyor-General in this behalf, as in the said section is provided, do hereby declare that the rural lands enumerated in the Schedule hereto shall be open for sale or selection on and after the seventh day of December, one thousand eight hundred and ninety-eight; and also that the lands mentioned in the said Schedule may, at the option of the applicant, be purchased for cash, or be selected for occupation with right of purchase or on lease in perpetuity, or, in respect of any land containing or supposed to contain any metal, mineral, or valuable stone, be selected on lease in perpetuity only; and I do hereby also fix the prices at which the said lands shall be sold, occupied, or leased, as mentioned in the said Schedule hereto, and do declare that the said lands shall be sold, occupied, or leased under and subject to the provisions of “The Land Act, 1892.”

All undulating forest land, papa formation, well watered; the timber consists principally of tawa, tawhero, rewarewa, with the usual undergrowth, and in places there is rimu and matai. On Section 9, Block XIV., there is heavy manuka on the flats in the valley, and may be found all along Kohuratahi Stream down as far as its junction with the Whitianga. The bush on Sections 12 and 14 has been destroyed by fire, all large trees being killed, many of them being down, and fern and underscrub have grown up on Section 12, but fern only on Section 14. Access is by Kohuratahi and Whitianga Roads, the former being felled and cleared as far as boundary of Section 13 (forest reserve), and formed as a bridle-road to within one mile and a half of Section 9, Block XV.; there is also access by canoe up Tangarakau River. Distance from Stratford Railway-station, about fifty-one miles by Ohura Road, which is formed and partly metalled for dray traffic. Distance from Section 14, down Tangarakau River to Wanganui River, fifteen miles, and from thence to Pipiriki about twenty-five miles. A steamer has been brought up Wanganui River as far as the mouth of Tangarakau.

The foregoing sections are portion of the Taumatamahoe Block, and are distant from fifty to fifty-nine miles from Stratford Railway-station by Ohura and branch roads, the former being formed for dray traffic. The country is all covered with forest, principally of tawa; the formation is papa, and well watered; altitude, from 600 ft. to 1,400 ft. above sea-level, and ridges rise to 800 ft. above valleys. The farthest outlying section is about nine miles from Ohura Road. The sections are more or less broken.

All pastoral lands, covered with forest, generally of tawa, with moderate mixture of rimu, kahikatea, totara, matai, silver-pine, and heavy birch on ridges and leading spurs; the soil is good but thin, and well watered. The Whangamomona Valley varies in altitude from 470 ft. to 500 ft. above sea-level, and the dividing ridge, being the Wanganui-Patea watershed, is from 1,000 ft. to 1,250 ft. above sea-level. Distant from Stratford between thirty-five and forty-two miles.
