Section 2, Block II., Maungakaretu District, is situated on the Owhakura Road. The present access is from Main Road three miles east of Karioi, which is about ten miles distant, via a pack-track which leads over this section. Future access will be via Turakina Road. The section comprises, generally speaking, hillocky and gently undulating forest country, with small flats scattered throughout; there is about 8 acres of open grass land in the southern portion of section. The soil is similar to that on Section 1, Block II. The forest is medium, light on hillocks and heavy in gullies, comprising rimu, matai, kowhai, miro, tarata, &c., with a medium undergrowth of maku, mahoe, kotukutuku, rangiora, koromiko, &c. The section is well watered by permanent streams. The elevation ranges from about 1,680 ft. to 2,118 ft. above sea-level.

Section 4, Block II., Maungakaretu District, is situated on the Turakina Valley Road. The present and future access same as for Section 2, Block II. The section comprises about half of heavy pine flat, the remainder being gently rising land. The soil is similar to that on Sections 1 and 2. The forest is heavy on flats and medium on sideling, comprising kahikatea, matai, miro, rimu, maire, &c., with a medium undergrowth of rangiora, maku, mahoe, &c. The section is well watered. The elevation ranges from about 1,650 ft. to 1,850 ft. above sea-level.

Section 5, Block II., Maungakaretu District, is situated on the Owhakura Road. The present access is same as for Sections 2 and 4. Future access will probably be via Turakina and Owhakura Roads. The section comprises undulating bush country, with the exception of about 40 acres of an old Native clearing on the west central portion of the section. The soil is similar to that on Sections 1 and 2. The forest is fairly heavy throughout, comprising rimu, matai, maire, kahikatea, miro, &c., with a medium undergrowth of maku, mahoe, kowhai, kotukutuku, &c. The section is fairly well watered by small streams. The elevation ranges from about 1,650 ft. to 1,900 ft. above sea-level.

Section 12, Block II., Maungakaretu District, is situated on the Turakina Road. The present access is from Main Road, three miles east of Karioi, which is about eleven miles distant, via pack-tracks and uncleared surveyed road. Future access will be via Turakina Road. The section comprises at the back portion flat-topped spurs, falling towards Turakina River, ending in gentle slopes along the road-frontage. The soil is same as preceding sections. The forest is medium throughout, comprising rimu, kahikatea, maire, miro, &c., with a medium undergrowth of maku, mahoe, kotukutuku, matipo, koromiko, &c. The section is well watered by small streams, and has frontage to Turakina River. The elevation ranges from about 1,600 ft. to 1,900 ft. above sea-level.

Section 1, Block VI., Maungakaretu District, is situated on the Turakina Road. The present access is from Main Road, three miles east of Karioi, which is about twelve miles distant, via pack-track and uncleared surveyed road. The future access will be via Turakina Road. The section comprises at the back portion undulating land, which falls towards the Turakina River, forming gentle slopes and flats along the road-frontage. The soil is of good quality, 4 in. to 8 in. in depth, resting on papa-and-sandstone formation. The forest is fairly heavy to light, comprising rimu, matai, kahikatea, maire, miro, &c., with a medium undergrowth of mahoe, maku, kotukutuku, tarata, rangiora, &c. The section is well watered by permanent streams, and is close to the Turakina River. The elevation ranges from about 1,600 ft. to 1,900 ft. above sea-level.

Section 2, Block VI., Maungakaretu District: The situation and present access same as Section 1, Block VI. The section comprises at the back portion flat-topped spurs and undulating country, which falls towards the Turakina River, forming gentle slopes and flats along the road-frontage. The soil is similar to that on Section 1, Block VI. The forest is medium throughout, comprising rimu, kahikatea, matai, maire, &c., with a medium undergrowth of maku, mahoe, kotukutuku, tarata, &c. The section is well watered by permanent streams. The elevation ranges from about 1,550 ft. to 1,900 ft. above sea-level.

Reserves in the Town of Levin for Lease.

District Lands and Survey Office,
Wellington, 15th August, 1898.

IT is hereby notified, in terms of “The Public Reserves Act, 1881,” that written tenders will be received at this office up to 4 p.m. on Wednesday, the 12th day of October, 1898, for the lease of the under-mentioned reserves. If any sections are unapplied-for on the above date they will remain open for selection at the upset rentals and for the terms stated.

These reserves are conveniently situated in the Township of Levin, which is on the Wellington and Manawatu Railway-line, about fifty-nine miles distant from Wellington. The sections are all level, and, with the exception of Sections 11, Block III.; 2, Block IV.; 3 and 10, Block V.; 4, Block VI.; 7, Block XII.; 3 and 7, Block XIII.; and 6 and 13, Block XIV., which are still either in forest or scrub, are, generally speaking, open and in grass, or partially so. The soil is light, and rests on a shingle formation.


Terms of Lease.

  1. Tenders must be accompanied by marked cheque or post-office order for six months’ rent at the rate offered, together with £1 1s. lease-fee.

  2. There are no restrictions or limitations as to the number of sections which one person may lease, and no declaration is required. Residence and improvements are not compulsory. No compensation shall be claimed by the lessees, nor shall any be allowed by the Government, on account of any improvements effected by the lessee, nor for any other cause.

  3. Possession will be given on the day of acceptance of tender.

  4. The leases shall be for the term of years as specified above, but shall be subject to termination by twelve months’ notice in the event of the land being required by the Government.

  5. The rent shall be payable half-yearly in advance.

  6. The lands are to be let for grazing purposes, and the lessees will not be permitted to break up or crop any of the same without the written permission of the Commissioner of Crown Lands first had and obtained.

  7. The lessee shall use all reasonable means to prevent the spread of gorse, broom, and sweetbriar on the land comprised in his lease.
