Commissioner’s Decisions under Tariff Acts.

Department of Trade and Customs,
Wellington, 14th September, 1898.

IT is hereby notified for public information that the Hon. the Commissioner of Trade and Customs has decided to interpret the Customs and Excise Duties Acts in relation to the under-mentioned articles as follows:—

NOTE.—“Not otherwise enumerated” appears as n.o.e.; “other kinds” as o.k.; “articles and materials suited only for, and to be used solely in, the fabrication of goods in the colony” as a. & m.s. Articles marked thus * are revised decisions.

Articles, and how classed. Rate of Duty.
*98/763. Caramel, other than brewers’; as druggists’ sundries 20 per cent.
*98/685. Chamois crust—viz., unfinished but partly dressed leather; as chamois-leather 20 per cent.
98/910. “Celerina”; as patent medicines 40 per cent.
98/237. Dextro-lævulose; as glucose 1d. the lb.
98/995. Ceilings, stamped metal-work for; as mouldings for ceilings 15 per cent.
98/853. Gas valves; as metal manufactures n.o.e. 20 per cent.
*98/773. Galvanised screw-bolts and nuts, known as “gutter-bolts,” if they are within the dimensions laid down in item 405 Free.
98/991. Gauze—viz., double cyanide of mercury and zinc, moist; as surgical appliances Free.
*98/938. Glasses, folding, magnifying, having one or two lenses, not exceeding 1½ in. in diameter; to be classed with microscopes, and lenses for the same Free.
98/872. Italian cloth, scarlet; as textile piece goods other than cotton 20 per cent.
98/852. Lacquered panels for the manufacture of bamboo furniture; as woodenware n.o.e. 20 per cent.
98/896. Lime, Hydrosulphite of; as water-hardening chemicals Free.
98/861. Magnesia, Fluid, “Murray’s”; as proprietary medicines 40 per cent.
98/911. Petroleum emulsion with Hypo-phosphites, “Angier’s”; as proprietary medicines 40 per cent.
98/910. “Sanmetto”; as patent medicines 40 per cent.
98/821. Steel shoes for cultivators; as a. & m.s. Free.
98/888. Sulpholine lotion, “Pepper’s”; as proprietary medicines 40 per cent.
98/968. “Viscol,” for dressing leather; as leather dressing 20 per cent.

PURSUANT to the provisions of an Act of the General Assembly of New Zealand passed in the forty-fourth year of the reign of Her Majesty Queen Victoria, and intituled “The Marriage Act, 1880,” the following names of Officiating Ministers within the meaning of the said Act are published for general information:—

Wesleyan Methodist Church.

The Reverend Harold Blomfield.

The Reverend George William Cobb.

The Auckland Central (Unsectarian) Mission.

The Reverend John Walter.

Notice of Vesting of Land in the Public Trustee under “The Unclaimed Lands Act, 1894.”

WHEREAS I, the undersigned, the Public Trustee, have, for the purposes of “The Unclaimed Lands Act, 1894,” made due inquiries with respect to the land described in the Schedule hereunder written, and the owner thereof, and have, in respect of the said land, given the notices prescribed by section 4 of the said Act, and have in all respects complied with the provisions of the said section: And whereas I have not thereby ascertained who the owner is, and believe that such owner is not in the colony, nor has such owner established his title to the said land, as required by the said Act: I hereby give notice that the said land is, under and by virtue of the said Act, vested in me, as the Public Trustee as aforesaid, as from the date of the publication hereof, and will be administered under the said Act, the assessed value of the said land being less than £100.
