from the Alexandra Cavalry Volunteers to the Wellington District Reserve Corps, on resigning from the first-mentioned corps, and with effect from the 1st August, 1898.

Formation of Volunteer Rifle Battalion.

HIS Excellency the Governor has been pleased to approve, under paragraphs 211 and 213, Volunteer Regulations, 1895, of the formation of the under-mentioned Volunteer corps in the Auckland District into an infantry battalion, under the designation of the “2nd Battalion, Auckland Rifle Volunteers,” with effect from the 9th day of July, 1898, and with headquarters at Paeroa:—

Te Aroha Rifle Volunteers.

No. 1 Company, Ohinemuri Rifle Volunteers.

No. 2 Company, Ohinemuri Rifle Volunteers.

Hauraki Rifle Volunteers.

No. 3 Company, Ohinemuri Rifle Volunteers.

Coromandel Rifle Volunteers.

Volunteer Corps disbanded.

Civil Service Senior Examination.

Special Order made by the Masterton Road Board, County of Wairarapa North.

THE following special order, made by the Masterton Road Board, is published in accordance with the provisions of “The Road Boards Act, 1882.”

MASTERTON ROAD DISTRICT.

By-laws relating to Heavy Traffic.

In pursuance and exercise of the powers and authorities vested in it by “The Road Boards Act, 1882,” and “The Public Works Act, 1894,” or any amendment thereof respectively, and every other power and authority thereto enabling it, the Board of the Masterton Road District doth hereby, in respect of all roads, bridges, ferries, and fords under the care, control, or management of the said Board, make the following by-laws:—

  1. In the construction of these by-laws the words “heavy traffic” shall, unless a different meaning shall be required by the context, mean heavy traffic as defined by section 130 of “The Public Works Act, 1894.”

  2. A yearly license-fee of £25 shall be paid to the said Board on every vehicle, engine, or machine engaged in heavy traffic, where timber, whether sawn, split, or in logs, is or are being transported, either separately or together with any other thing or things.

  3. No person shall in any year conduct or engage in any heavy traffic, where timber, whether sawn, split, or in logs, is or are, either separately or together with any other thing or things, being transported with or by means of any vehicle, engine, or machine, until the license-fee payable in respect thereof for the then current year has been paid to the said Board.

  4. The person for the time being in charge of any vehicle, engine, or machine proceeding or being upon any road or bridge under the care, control, or management of the said Board shall, whenever required by any officer or other person in the employment of the said Board, either for the purposes of these by-laws or any other by-law for the time being in force in the said district, cause such vehicle, engine, or machine to be and to remain stopped for a reasonable and sufficient time for the purpose of enabling such officer or person to inspect, examine, and measure such vehicle, engine, or machine, and every or any part thereof, and the load being transported thereon; and the person so in charge shall permit such inspection, examination, and measurement to be made accordingly, and no person shall obstruct any such officer or person in or about making such inspection, examination, or measurement.

  5. Every person guilty of any offence against any of the provisions of these by-laws shall be liable for each offence to a penalty not exceeding £5.

These by-laws shall come into force on the 9th day of September, 1898.

Passed at a special meeting of the Board, this 3rd day of September, 1898.

In the matter of “The Native Townships Act, 1895,” and in the matter of an application to the Court by the Honourable John McKenzie, Minister of Lands, to ascertain and determine who are the Native owners, and their relative interests as such, in the Native township situate on the Whanganui River, and known as Pipiriki.

At a sitting of the Court held at Whanganui on the 11th day of February, 1898, before Robert Ward, Esq., Judge, and Benjamin F. J. Edwards, Assessor, after due inquiry, it
