Later information is not available, as the births and deaths of Maoris are not recorded.

CHINESE.—Chinese are included in the population given above. The number in New Zealand on 31st December, 1897, was estimated to be 3,585, of whom 29 were females.

REMARKS.—Excluding Maoris, the population of the colony increased by 14,894, or at the rate of 2·09 per cent., during the year. To this increase, excess of births over deaths contributed 12,142, and excess of arrivals over departures 2,752. The balance in favour of the colony, as disclosed by the immigration and emigration returns, is larger than in any year since 1893.

The birth-rate for the colony in 1897 was 25·96 per 1,000 of mean population, and the death-rate 9·14, as against 26·33 and 9·10 respectively in 1896.

The number of births registered in 1897 (18,737) slightly exceeded the number in 1896 (18,612); but, with the increased population, the rate per 1,000 for 1897 is lower.

The deaths in 1897 (6,595) exceeded the number registered in 1896 (6,432) by 163, and thus increased the rate per 1,000 from 9·10 to 9·14.

The number of marriages (excluding those contracted between Maoris) solemnised in 1897 is estimated at 5,000, giving a rate of 6·93 per 1,000 of the mean population, against 4,843 and 6·85, the actual number and rate in 1896.

The fluctuations of the birth-, death-, and marriage-rates for ten years are as under:—

Per 1,000 of Population.
Birth-rate. Death-rate. Marriage-rate.

1889 .. .. .. 30·07 9·44 5·94
