“The Agricultural and Pastoral Statistics Act, 1895.”—Interim Return, 1897–98.—Notice No. 506.

Department of Agriculture, Wellington, 27th January, 1898.

THE following figures show the areas under cereals and quantity of grain on hand at 15th November, 1897. A reduction had to be made last year from the areas under wheat, oats, and barley “for threshing” on account of the dry weather, and the same is done this year.

The following are the total areas under wheat, oats, and barley “for threshing” as per returns:—

Wheat. Oats. Barley.
Acres. Estimated Total Acres. Estimated Total Acres. Estimated Tot
Yield. Bushels. Yield. Bushels. Yield. Bushels
342,393 .. .. 376,385 .. .. 30,398 .. ..
20,000* .. .. 20,000* .. .. 2,000* .. ..
322,393 21 6,770,253 356,385 30 10,691,550 28,398 25 709,950
  • Estimated will now be cut “for chaffing” or “for feeding down.”

The backwardness of the season, and the consequent lateness of the crops in the southern portion of Otago, has prevented an estimate of the yields being obtained for the several provincial districts, therefore an estimate for the whole colony has been struck.

The quantity of wheat available for the period, 15th November, 1897, to, say, 15th November, 1898, may be estimated as follows:—

On hand at 15th November, 1897 .. .. .. .. .. 1,112,682 Bushels.
Harvest of 1898 .. .. .. .. .. 6,770,253
Total .. .. .. .. .. 7,882,935

The complete returns will be published at an early date, and an estimate of the actual yields will be made from the threshing returns.

JOHN D. RITCHIE,
Secretary for Agriculture.
