Later information cannot be given, as the births and deaths of Maoris are not recorded.

REMARKS.—The above figures show that for the March quarter there was a natural increase to the population of the colony amounting to 2,830 persons, being the excess of births over deaths. This natural increase is not so great as that for the March quarter of 1897, when the colony added 2,959 persons to its numbers by births over deaths.

In regard to arrivals and departures, it will be seen that New Zealand lost, during the three months, 173 persons, being the excess of departures over arrivals. In the March quarter of 1897 the movement was more satisfactory, as the colony gained 528 persons by excess of arrivals.
