The remaining suburbs do not lie within borough boundaries, and particulars respecting them have not been obtained for the Vital Statistics.

Some few of the estimated populations given above are subject to revision, the data necessary for the computations not having as yet been supplied in all cases.

Deaths occurring at hospitals, of persons not residents of the borough wherein the hospital is situated, have been allotted in each case to the borough where the disease was contracted, and not to that in which the death actually took place.

The total births in the above boroughs amounted to 395, against 377 in December, an increase of 18. The deaths in January were 214, an increase of 53 on the number in December. Of the total deaths, males contributed 110, females 104. Sixty-three of the deaths were of children under 5 years of age, being 29·44 per cent. of the whole number; 54 of these were under 1 year of age. There were 59 deaths of persons of 65 years and upwards: eight men, 65, 66, 67, 68 (two), 72, 81, 87, and five women, 70, 80, 81, 83, 89, died at Auckland; four men, 69, 75, 76, 78, and five women, 72, 76, 80, 86, 87, at Wellington; nine men, 65, 66 (two), 67, 69, 70 (two), 71, 74, and ten women, 66, 67, 68, 70, 71, 72, 80, 81, 83, 93, at Christchurch; and thirteen men, 68, 69 (four), 70 (two), 74, 75, 79, 80 (two), 94, and five women, 69, 71, 74, 88, 92, at Dunedin.
