Nov. 25.] THE NEW ZEALAND GAZETTE. 2139

No. 9593.—31st May, 1897.—William Morton, of St. Andrew Street, Dunedin, New Zealand, Engineer. An invention for gold-saving apparatus.

The nature of the proposed amendments is as follows, viz.:—

(1.) To insert at the beginning of the description, immediately after the word “statement,” line 7, page 1, the words, “The object of my invention is to produce an improved apparatus for saving either crushed gold particles or particles liberated from quartz or other matrix, as from batteries, or the fine gold particles in black sand, or from the various alluvial goldfields, and more especially the finer gold that generally escapes to the tailings when worked commercially in large quantities. The wash is preferably screened to exclude any portions that would otherwise choke the apparatus. The apparatus consists of a frame or.”

(2.) To insert the words, “or passage,” after the word “chamber,” line 9, page 1.

(3.) To insert the word “preferably” between the words “standing” and “vertically,” line 9, page 1.

(4.) To insert, after the word “passes,” line 10, page 1, the words, “turning over or reversing during its passage through the zig-zag chamber.”

(5.) To insert, after the word “chamber,” line 12, page 1, the words “which is covered with, or formed of, silvered or otherwise prepared copper plates, matting, plush, or may be.”

(6.) To insert the words “any other” before, and “gold-saving” after, the word “suitable,” line 12, page 1.

(7.) To insert, after the word “purpose,” line 13, page 1, the following words, viz.: “and more than one saving material may be used in different parts of one box or chamber—for instance, such as matting near the top, and copper plates or plush near the bottom—or one suitable material may be used right through. Other than flat surfaces may be employed to effect the same object.”

(8.) To insert, after the words “Reference to drawing,” line 1, page 2, the following words and figures, viz.: “Fig. 1 is a section of the apparatus showing the construction. Fig. 2 is a view from the front showing the back portion of the apparatus. Fig. 3 is a plan and Fig. 4 is a diagram showing the same movement of the wash-dirt directed by different-shaped surfaces placed to force the whole in a zig-zag course.”

(9.) To insert, after the words “A is the zig-zag chamber,” line 2, page 2, the following words and figures, viz.: “or passages down which the gold-bearing wash-dirt travels, turning over and reversing against the surfaces in a zigzag course. A’ is a metal sheet usually extending the whole length of the passage, dividing it into more than one, and prepared for gold-saving on all surfaces. A” are blocks forming the passages, or partly so. a, a’, and a” are different-shaped surfaces for the same object as the passage A, as will be seen by the directing arrows.”

(10.) To insert, between the words “showing” and “one,” line 3, page 2, the words “the blocks A”, on the.”

(11.) To insert, at the foot of page 2, the following words, viz.: “as one method of securing the sides G G to the front, back, and guides of the passages so as to be water-tight, which is effected in such a manner as by the insertion of a strip of cloth between the sides G, and E, and F. It is obvious that, as it is the object of the invention to force the wash-dirt, preferably by gravitation, from side to side, turning it over, and reversing the direction each time, and so on throughout, the exact shapes of the blocks, guides, and, consequently, of the passages, or the angle at which the apparatus stands, is not essential, but it is believed that the most effective forms are set forth herein, as the gold is retained on all surfaces—the under as well as the upper surfaces. The invention aims at passing wash-dirt, water, and gold in thin streams between gold-saving surfaces in an enclosed box, and the course of such through the box is zig-zag. This invention may be used with existing tables, tail-races, sluice-boxes, and the like for saving gold often otherwise lost, or it may be used alone. Any suitable sizes, shapes of blocks or guides; passages, or gold-saving surfaces may be adopted.”

(12.) To alter the claim by—(a) prefixing the words, “1. In an apparatus for saving gold, the combination in a case or box, preferably upright, of blocks placed alternately against the opposite sides of the box, so that they form”; (b) inserting the words “or passages” after the word “chamber,” and (c) inserting the following words and figures after the word “passes,” viz.:—

“the said blocks being covered with a gold-saving surface, or the passages being lined with a gold-saving surface, and the gold being saved by the wash, water, and gold being forced from side to side and reversing or turning over against the saving surfaces, the whole being capable of easy taking to pieces for cleaning up and extracting the gold, substantially as described and explained, and as illustrated in the accompanying drawing.

“2. In an apparatus for saving gold, the combination of the variously-shaped surfaces (such as A’, A”, a, a’, a”) for deflecting the wash, water, and gold, causing them to turn over or reverse against the surfaces in a zig-zag direction, substantially as described and explained, and as illustrated in the accompanying drawing.

“3. The passing of auriferous wash in thin streams between gold-saving surfaces in an enclosed box at any angle in a zig-zag direction, substantially as described, and for the purposes specified.”

(13.) To insert in the drawings the diagram hereinbefore referred to, number the various figures, make a small addition to and insert letters of reference in Fig. 1.

The applicant states, “My reasons for making this amendment are as follows: To more particularly describe the invention, and to set forth the subject-matter of the invention claimed so that it may be more easily understood.”
