Appointing a Trustee for the Charleston Hospital Land.

HIS Excellency the Governor has been pleased, in pursuance of section 30 of “The Special Powers and Contracts Act, 1885,” to appoint

JAMES PARSONS,

of Charleston, farmer, in the place of Thomas Shine, of Charleston, miner, resigned, as a Trustee of Section No. 28, Square 137, Totara District, and Section No. 37, Block IV., Buller District (Waitakere), Nelson Land District, to hold the said land, in conjunction with Bernard Shepherd and Nicholas Weir, in trust for the benefit of the Charleston Hospital, subject as in the said Act mentioned.

Temporary Command of District Officer extended.

late H.M. 7th Dragoon Guards, to the temporary command of the Auckland Militia and Volunteer District being extended for a further period of six months from the 1st November, 1897.

Result of Poll for Proposed Loan, Borough of Campbelltown.

THE following notice, received from the Mayor of the Borough of Campbelltown, is published in accordance with the provisions of “The Municipal Corporations Act, 1886.”

BOROUGH OF CAMPBELLTOWN.

Proposal to borrow £5,000 for Public Works.

I HEREBY give public notice that at the poll taken on Friday, the 29th day of October, 1897, on the proposal of the Campbelltown Borough Council to raise by way of loan the sum of £5,000 for the purpose of carrying out certain public works, the following votes were recorded:—

Number of burgesses on the roll, 299; number of votes exercisable, 349: Number of burgesses who recorded their votes, 159; number of votes recorded in favour of the proposal, 191; number of votes against, 8; number of votes informal, 1; number of voters in favour of the proposal, 150; number of voters against, 8; number of votes informal, 1: majority in favour of the proposal—voters, 1; votes, 16.

I therefore declare the proposal carried.

This is the copy notice marked D referred to in the annexed declaration of Samuel Nichol, declared before me this 5th day of November, 1897—N. Macdonald, a Justice of the Peace for the Colony of New Zealand.


In the matter of “The Municipal Corporations Act, 1886,” and its amendments, and in the matter of a special loan of £5,000 proposed to be raised by the Corporation of the Borough of Campbelltown for the purpose of undertaking the construction of certain public works in the said borough.

I, Samuel Nichol, of Campbelltown, in the Colony of New Zealand, merchant, do solemnly and sincerely declare as follows:—

  1. I am the Mayor of the Borough of Campbelltown.

  2. The Council of the said Borough of Campbelltown is desirous of borrowing the sum of £5,000 by way of special loan, to be expended for the benefit of the inhabitants of the said borough, and for the purposes set forth in the notice a copy of which is hereunto annexed and marked with the letter A.*

  3. That by order of the Council of the said borough I published in the Southern Cross, a newspaper circulating in the said borough, on the 18th and 25th days of September, and the 2nd and 9th days of October, 1897, being once in each week for four successive weeks, a notice a copy of which is hereunto annexed and marked with the letter A.*

  4. That I as such Mayor called a meeting of the burgesses of the said Borough of Campbelltown for a day not more than ten days after the last publication of such last-mentioned notice, to consider the said proposal, and on the 11th day of October, 1897, in the Southland Times, a newspaper so circulating as aforesaid, I gave public notice of the calling of such meeting, and of the day, hour, and place appointed for same, a copy of which notice is hereunto annexed and marked with the letter B.*

  5. In pursuance of the said last-mentioned notice a meeting of the burgesses of the said borough was held in the Drill Hall, Barrow Street, Campbelltown aforesaid, on Thursday, the 14th day of October, 1897, being a day not more than ten days after the last publication of the notice mentioned in paragraph 3 hereof, to consider the said proposal, and I presided at such meeting, and, after due consideration and discussion, I gave notice that a poll would be taken thereon.

  6. After such notice had been published, and before the poll was taken, a special roll was made up by the Town Clerk of the said borough in accordance with the provisions of section 180 of “The Municipal Corporations Act, 1886,” and the said special roll was signed by myself as such Mayor as aforesaid, and by two Councillors of the said borough.

  7. As such Mayor as aforesaid I published, on the 16th, 23rd, and 29th days of October, 1897, a notice in the Southland Times, a newspaper so circulating as aforesaid, setting forth the day on which the said poll would be taken, a copy of which notice is hereunto annexed and marked with the letter C.*

  8. As such Mayor I gave the Returning Officer notice in writing requiring him to take the poll on the day appointed for the same by the said notice mentioned in paragraph 7 hereof.

  9. The said poll was taken on the said day, in accordance with the provisions in that behalf provided by “The Municipal Corporations Act, 1886,” and the voting on the said proposal was as follows:—Number of burgesses on the roll, 299; number of votes exercisable, 349: Number of burgesses who recorded their votes, 159; number of votes recorded in favour of the proposal, 191; number of votes against, 8; number of votes informal, 1; number of voters in favour of the proposal, 150; number of voters against, 8; number of votes informal, 1: majority in favour of the proposal—voters, 1; votes, 16.

  10. That, on the 1st day of November, 1897, in the Southland Times, a newspaper so circulating as aforesaid, I gave public notice of the number of votes recorded for and against the proposal, as provided by “The Municipal Corporations Act, 1886,” and, a majority in number of the burgesses having voted in favour of the proposal, and the number so voting being entitled to more than one-half in number of the votes which could be exercised by the whole number of burgesses, I declared the resolution carried.

  11. That annexed hereto, and marked with the letter D, is a copy of such last-mentioned notice.

And I make this solemn declaration conscientiously believing the same to be true, and by virtue of the provisions of an Act of the General Assembly of New Zealand intituled “The Justices of the Peace Act, 1882.”

COUNTY OF CHEVIOT, HAWKSWOOD RIDING.

At a poll of the ratepayers within the Hawkswood Riding of the County of Cheviot, taken on Saturday, the 30th October, 1897, upon a proposal to raise a loan of £1,200 under “The Local Bodies’ Loans Act, 1886,” for the Hawkswood Riding of the County of Cheviot, for the construction of the following public works—viz., two bridges at £150 each, £300; construction of new roads, £700; proportion of estimated cost of proposed county buildings, McKenzie, £100; surveys and cost of exchange of roads, £100: total, £1,200—the following votes were recorded:—

For the proposal, 8 persons exercised 18 votes; against the proposal, nil: Total number on the roll, 13 persons, capable of exercising 27 votes.

As a majority of persons voted in favour of the proposal, and the number so voting exercised a majority of votes exercisable in favour of the proposal, I declare the above proposal to be carried.
