Lands in Canterbury Land District forfeited.

IT is hereby notified that, the leases and license of the
under-mentioned Crown lands having been forfeited by
resolutions of the Canterbury Land Board, the said lands
have reverted to the Crown, under the provisions of "The
Land Act, 1885," and "The Land Act, 1892."

NOTICE is hereby given that the under-mentioned section of Crown land will be offered for sale by public auction on Wednesday, the 26th day of January, 1898.

TARANAKI LAND DISTRICT.

Village of Eltham.

SECTION No. 40 : Area, 1 acre ; upset price, £15.

Terms of Sale.—One-fifth of the purchase-money to be paid on the fall of the hammer, and the balance, with Crown-grant fee, within thirty days thereafter, otherwise the part of the purchase-money paid by way of deposit shall be forfeited, and the contract for the sale of the land be null and void.

Land in Elsthorpe Estate, Hawke's Bay, open for Selection on Lease in Perpetuity.

District Lands and Survey Office,
Napier, 25th September, 1897.

THE under-mentioned Crown lands will be open for selection upon lease in perpetuity, at this office, on Wednesday, the 17th November, 1897, under the provisions of "The Land Act, 1892," and "The Land for Settlements Act, 1894," and its amendments.

If more than one application is received for the same section on the same day, then the order of selection shall be decided by ballot on the following day, at 11 a.m.

Description of Land.—Section 3 contains about 100 acres of agricultural land, the remainder being broken country, and only suitable for pastoral purposes; the soil is good,

on papa formation, and well watered; the average height above sea-level is 800ft.; there are about 176 chains of post-and-wire fencing on the north and west boundaries, and about 92 chains of internal fencing; the distance from Kaikora by road is eighteen miles, fourteen miles of which are formed and gravelled, the remainder is to be formed; in English and native grasses. Section 34 is well watered grass land adjoining the village; there are erected on it a large open shed used for storing hay, a good cattle-yard, a loose-box, and about 16 chains of internal fencing. Section 39 is well watered, the Makara Stream forming part of the boundary; nearly half of the section is flat, the balance being undulating hills with easy slopes; the soil is very good, all in grass, and suitable for cultivation; there are about 64 chains of boundary and 24 chains of internal fencing.

Description of Land.—The Village of Elsthorpe is situated on the main road from Kaikora to the coast, about fourteen miles from the former place. It is a very pretty spot, approached from both sides through clumps of carefully preserved native bush—a somewhat rare sight in that part of the country. The sections are all in good sward, and will make excellent residence-sites.

Section 8, Rewa Village Settlement, is situated in the Rewa Village Settlement, in the Rangitikei Valley, on the main road from Feilding to Sandon Block, and consists of flat land, rather swampy in places. The soil is good, being river-deposit overlying gravel. It is covered with forest of a mixed character, containing rimu, matai, kahikatea, tawa, &c., with the usual undergrowth. The section is about twenty miles from Feilding, and about three miles from Waituna Post- and Telegraph-office, by a good dray-road. There is a school close to the section.

Section 1, Pongaroa Village Settlement, is situated on the Manuhara Road, in the Pongaroa Village Settlement, and consists of somewhat broken country, with a permanent
