of the North Sandspit bears N.W. by W., the lighthouse
N.E., and Pukitu E.S.E.

Caution.—Owing to the rapid changes which sometimes
take place in the vicinity of Tory Shoal, mariners should
pay particular attention to the lead, and to any directions
given from the signal-station near the lighthouse.

All bearings are correct magnetic.

Washington and Palmyra Islands.

H.M.S. “Penguin” reports that the following are the
correct positions of the above-named islands: Washington
Island—latitude 4° 43′ N., longitude 160° 24′ W.; Palmyra
Island—latitude 5° 52′ 18″ N., longitude 162° 5′ W.

Approach to Woodlark Island.

Latitude 9° 13′ S., longitude 152° 49′ E. (approximate).

H.M.S. “Wallaroo” reports that the positions of Alcester
Islands and Sharp Island (which is that shown on chart
No. 2764 as N. 67° E., 19 miles, from Alcester Islands) are
not correctly shown on the existing chart, and that they
are situated approximately as follows: Alcester Islands—
latitude 9° 33′ 30″ S., longitude 152° 25′ E.; Sharp Island
—latitude 9° 29′ S., longitude 152° 40′ E.

Application to proclaim certain Rivers and Creeks, together
with all their Tributaries, Watercourses for the Deposit
of Tailings.

IN pursuance of the powers vested in him by section 152
of “The Mining Act, 1891,” His Excellency the
Governor directs it to be notified that application has been
made to him to proclaim the following rivers and creeks
in the Land Districts of Nelson and Westland to be water-
courses into which tailings, mining débris, and waste water
of every kind used in, upon, or discharged from any claim
or licensed holding adjacent to such watercourses shall be
suffered to flow or be discharged.

NELSON LAND DISTRICT.

That creek known as Soldier's Creek, which flows north-
westerly through Sections 153, 152, and 244, Blocks XIII.
and XIV., Reefton Survey District, for a distance of about
two miles, from its source to its confluence with Devil's
Creek; and also the several tributaries thereof.

That creek known as Walker's Creek, which flows westerly
through Sections 5, 6, and 7, Block XII., Inangahua Survey
District, for a distance of about one mile, from its source to
its confluence with the Inangahua River; and also the tribu-
taries thereof.

That creek known as Blacksand Creek, which flows
westerly through Sections 14, 18, 17, and 16, Block XII.,
Inangahua Survey District, for a distance of about one mile,
from its source to its confluence with the Inangahua River;
and also the tributaries thereof.

WESTLAND LAND DISTRICT.

That creek known as the Big Kapitea Creek, which flows
north-westerly from its source on the northern boundary of
the Kumara Reservoir Reserve for a distance of nine miles
to the ocean; and also the several tributaries thereof.

That creek known as the Little Kapitea Creek, which
flows north-easterly from its source in a terrace above
Duffer's Track for a distance of about three miles to its con-
fluence with the Big Kapitea Creek; and also the several
tributaries thereof.

Dated at Wellington, this 27th day of October, 1897.
