B onuses for Encouragement of New Z ealand Hemp (Phor -
miurn tenax) Indus try.—Notice No. 430.

B onus No. 1.
A BONUS of £1,750 is offered for a machine or process
for dress ing New Z ealand h emp (Phormium tenax)
which shall be an improvement on the machines or processes
now in use, and which shall, after trial, be found to mat e -
rially reduce the cost of production, improve the product, or
inc rease the quantity of d res sed fibre.
The following are the conditions:—

All applications for the bonus must be sent add res sed
to the H on. the Minister for Agriculture, Wellington, and
m ust reach him not later than the 31st December, 1897.
Each application must be accom panied by a description of the
m achine or process, particularly s tating improv ements on
p res ent machines or processes, and also the cost at which
the machine or process can be sup plied. -
The app licants must be prepared to submit their
m achines or processes to exam ination at such time and
place as the Government may direct. -
The Government shall appoint a committee of three or
more experts, to whom all applications shall be submitted.
S uch committee shall, after perusal, state what machines or
p rocesses they d eem w or th y of considera t i on, and may in -
spect the same at any place within the col ony; and, having
so inspected the whole or any of them, may direct that the
w hole or any of them be brought for further trial to such
p l a c e as they may think fit.
The cost of bringing the machines or appliances on to the
ground, from within the col ony, sup plying the necessary
shafting, mot ive-pow er, and buildings, to be defrayed by the
Government. If any machine sent from beyond the col ony
is aw arded the bonus or part thereof, then the cost of
br inging such machine shall be borne by the Government.
The following shall be the basis of the test :—
The committee shall supply a sufficient and equal quan -
tity of green h emp to each machine or process as a test.
The committee shall take into considera t i on—
The time occ upied by each machine or process in the
operation ;
The cost of lab our and time required after the fibre has
left the machine or process before it is ready for
baling ;
The percentage of d res sed fibre and tow produced by
each machine or process ;
The cost of produ cing the same ;
The cost of the machine, and the simplicity and dura -
ability of the working parts.
On completion of the tests the committee shall furnish a
report to the Minister on all the machines or processes which
the y have exam ined or tested, and shall state, —
(1.) The machine or process which they consider on the
w hole the most efficient and economic.
(2.) Whether they consider that any machine or process
tested so materially re d u c e s the cost of produc -
tion, or improves the product, as to be w or th y of
the whole bonus or of a part only.
(3.) Whether, in the event of no one machine or process
being entit led to the whole bonus, they d eem any
m achine or process w or th y of a part of the bonus,
and, if so, how much.
B onus No. 2.
A bonus of £250 is offered for a process of utilising the
w aste products of the h emp.
The first three conditions of B onus No. 1 to apply to this
a l s o .
The committee shall supply a sufficient and equal quantity
of the w aste products to each process as a test.
On completion of the tests the committee shall report to
the Minister, and shall give the following particulars of each
process: (a.) The nature of the article made. (b.) The
quantity produced, and the cost of production. (c.) The
value of the product. (d.) Whether any of the processes are
of sufficient importance to w arrant the Minister in giving
(1) the w hole, or (2) any part, of the bonus; (3) if a part
only, how much.

Notice No. 470.

Wellington, 5th January, 1897.
I T having been reported to me that the disease known as
"liver-fluke" exists among st she ep running on certain
lands in the Hawke's Bay L and D istrict, I therefore, in
accordance with section 14, sub section 4, of "The Stock Act,
1893," h ereby declare the under-mentioned lands to be an
infected place from which no she ep, carcase, or any portion
the reof shall be removed except under the direction of an
I ns pector of Stock :—
All that piece or p arcel of land, known as the Te A ute
R un, s ituated in the W aipawa, Hawke's Bay, and Patangata
Counties, bounded as follows: Commencing at the Te A ute
Railway-station, thence in a northerly direction along the
boundary of the Te Hauke Pro claimed D istrict to the point
w here the pro longation of the b ounda ry between L ots 1
and 2 of the N gawhakatara B lock continued across the
P oukawa L ake would strike it; thence easterly along the said
line and bounda ry to the Tukit uki River ; thence up that river
to the south bounda ry of Patangata No. 2 ; thence w esterly
along the sou thern bounda ry of that block to the P apanui
Stream ; thence up that stream and the easterly bounda ry
of Patangata No. 3 to the sou thern bounda ry of that block ;
thence w esterly along the sou thern bounda ries of Patangata
No. 3 and the O tane B lock to the south-east corner of the
land granted to the B ish op of Wellington; thence w esterly
along the sou thern bounda ry of the aforesaid land to the
sou thern bounda ry of Sebast opol No. 3 P addock; thence
w esterly along that bounda ry to the south-west corner of
that paddock; thence northerly along the w estern bounda ries
of the aforesaid paddock and of the land granted to the
B ish op of Wellington to the north-west corner of the said
land; thence easterly along the northerly bounda ry of the
aforesaid land to the main K aikora North and Te A ute
R oad; thence northerly along that road to a road running
throug h the P oupoutahi B lock; thence easterly along that
road to where it crosses the railway-line; thence northerly
along the railway-line to the point of commenc ement.
All that piece or p arcel of land, called or known as the
"Flukey P addock," containing about 74 ac res, s ituated in
the Te Mah anga R un, Te M a t a S urvey D istrict, Hawke's
B a y County.
