ACTS OF GALLANTRY FOR WHICH MEDALS AND CERTIFICATES OF MERIT HAVE BEEN AWARDED SINCE THE PUBLICATION OF THE LAST REPORT, NEW ZEALAND.

1522.—ROBERT OLIPHANT, of Auckland, New Zealand, a constable, aged twenty-six years, who rescued Margaret Pernell, of Bishop Cowie’s Home, Parnell, Auckland, aged eighteen years, a domestic, from drowning at Waitemata Harbour, Auckland, on the 29th May, 1896. Margaret Pernell jumped into the harbour; Oliphant jumped in after her, and, after very great difficulty, owing to the strong ebb-tide and the woman struggling, he succeeded in rescuing her. Silver medal.

1528.—WILLIAM MEHAFFEY, of Queenstown, New Zealand, a clerk, aged sixteen years, who rescued Frederick Hunter, of Saddle Hill, Dunedin, from drowning in Lake Wakatipu, Queenstown, on the 1st April, 1896. Hunter fell into the lake; Mehaffey jumped into the water and swam to him, and with difficulty got Hunter to the shore. Bronze medal.

1529.—HENRY GILES, of Cambridge, Waikato, New Zealand, carpenter, aged nineteen years, who rescued Roy Maunder, of Hanneton, aged four years, from fire at Rotorua on the 31st January, 1896. Giles having escaped himself, he heard a child was in the burning house, and ascended by some scantling to an upper window, entering the room in the midst of volumes of smoke. He crawled to the bed where the child lay, brought it to the window, and half slid, half fell to the ground. Giles was unconscious for a time. Silver medal.

1534.—JOHN GAUNTLETT, of 53, Roxburgh Street, Wellington, New Zealand, torpedoman, aged forty-eight years, who attempted to rescue Charles Hook, of Park Street, Wellington, a labourer, aged forty-two years, from drowning at Wellington, New Zealand, on the 19th May, 1896. Hook fell overboard, and Gauntlett jumped off the steamer “Ellen Ballance,” and supported the man until forced to relax his hold from exhaustion. Hook sank, and was never seen again. Bronze medal.

1536.—GEORGE HILL, of Devonport, Auckland, New Zealand, a militiaman, aged fifty-nine years, who rescued Chrissie Spinley, of the same place, aged fifteen years, from drowning at Devonport, Auckland, New Zealand, on the 28th February, 1896. Miss Spinley got out of her depth while bathing. Hill was attracted to the spot, and, plunging into the water, swam after the girl. When Hill reached the girl she grasped him, and both sank; then Hill freed himself, and swam with her to shallow water. Bronze medal.

1547.—THOMAS CHARLES MOYLE, of Auckland, New Zealand, a steward on the s.s. “Gairloch,” aged twenty-one years, who rescued Thomas Lloyd, of Normanby, Taranaki, New Zealand, a tea-dealer, aged forty-five years, from drowning at New Plymouth, New Zealand, on the 26th of February, 1895. Certificate of merit.

1591.—JOHN SINGLETON, of King Street, Wellington, New Zealand, labourer, aged forty-nine years, who rescued Thomas Kirkus, of Cambridge Road, Wellington, New Zealand, aged eight years, from drowning at Clyde Quay, Wellington, on the 22nd February, 1896. Certificate of merit.

1603.—WILLIAM HERBERT WILLIAMS, of Owen Street, Wellington, New Zealand, telegraphist, aged twenty-four years, who rescued Rolfe Wilson, of the same place, a clerk, aged eighteen years, from drowning at Worser Bay, New Zealand, on the 7th February, 1897. Certificate of merit.

1649.—JOHN HUNT, of New Brighton, Canterbury, New Zealand, a caretaker, aged thirty-nine years, who attempted to rescue Miss Wells, of Linwood, near Christchurch, New Zealand, aged twenty years, from drowning at New Brighton, on the 16th September, 1896. Miss Wells fell into the water. On the alarm being given, Hunt, without hesitating, swam towards the girl; but the strong ebb-tide carried her away from him out to sea, so Hunt returned, but had great difficulty in reaching the pier. Bronze medal.
