FURTHER results of the census taken on the 12th April, 1896, relating to sickness and infirmity, are published for general information.

SICKNESS AND INFIRMITY.—NUMBERS AT QUINQUENNIAL AGE-PERIODS.

TABLE I.—Showing the Numbers at Quinquennial Age-periods of Persons, Males, and Females (exclusive of Maoris) returned as Sick or suffering from Accident; and of those stated to be Deaf-and-dumb, Blind, Lunatic, Idiotic, Epileptic, Paralytic, Crippled and Deformed, suffering from Debility, and Deaf, on the 12th April, 1896.

NOTE.—For those under 15 years the numbers cannot be entirely relied on, because the instruction on the census schedules was that, “if unable to follow usual occupation by reason of illness or accident,” the word “Sick” or “Accident” was to be entered.

  • Including 41 “Dumb” only (22 males and 19 females), and 4 female deaf-mutes in lunatic asylums.

† Including 4 “Blind and Insane” (3 males and 1 female) in lunatic asylums; also 5 “Blind and Deaf” (3 males and 2 females), and 43 “partially” or “nearly” blind (27 males and 16 females).

NOTE.—Forty persons (22 males and 18 females) in lunatic asylums, returned as “Epileptic,” are not included in column “Lunatics.”
