REGISTRAR-GENERAL’S Report on the Vital Statistics of the Principal Towns of New Zealand during the month of December, 1896:—

The remaining suburbs do not lie within borough boundaries, and particulars respecting them have not been obtained for the Vital Statistics.

Deaths occurring at hospitals, of persons not residents of the borough wherein the hospital is situated, have been allotted in each case to the borough where the disease was contracted, and not to that in which the death actually took place.

The total births in the above boroughs amounted to 363, against 320 in November, an increase of 43. The deaths in December were 146, an increase of 30 on the number in November. Of the total deaths, males contributed 88, females 58. Thirty-one of the deaths were of children under 5 years of age, being 21·23 per cent. of the whole number; 24 of these were under 1 year of age. There were 26 deaths of person of 65 years and upwards: four men, 66, 67, 77, 79, and two women, 70, 72, died at Auckland; seven men, 65 (two), 67, 72, 77, 85, 86, and two women, 69, 77, at Wellington; three men, 66, 68, 75, at Christchurch; and five men, 66, 71, 75, 76, 86, and three women, 76, 80, 83, at Dunedin.

THE following Table shows the Causes of the Deaths of Persons of both Sexes under 5 Years of Age and 5 Years and upwards, and the Proportions per Cent. of Deaths from each Cause, in the Boroughs above given, registered during the Month of December, 1896.
