- The remaining suburbs do not lie within borough boundaries, and particulars respecting them have not been obtained for the Vital Statistics.
Deaths occurring at hospitals, of persons not residents of the borough wherein the hospital is situated, have been allotted in each case to the borough where the disease was contracted, and not to that in which the death actually took place.
The total births in the above boroughs amounted to 396, against 377 in March, an increase of 19. The deaths in April were 175, an increase of 7 on the number in March. Of the total deaths, males contributed 81, females 94. Sixty of the deaths were of children under 5 years of age, being 34.29 per cent. of the whole number; 50 of these were under 1 year of age. There were 39 deaths of persons of 65 years and upwards: four men, 69, 75, 85, 88, and three women, 70, 77 (two), died at Auckland; four men, 65 (two), 66, 68, and five women, 65, 69, 79, 82, 88, at Wellington; five men, 74, 75, 76, 77, 79, and four women, 68, 70, 74 (two), at Christchurch; and eight men, 66, 69 (two), 72, 77, 78, 79, 81, and six women, 66, 70, 72, 73, 77, 88, at Dunedin.
THE following Table shows the Causes of the Deaths of Persons of both Sexes under 5 Years of Age and 5 Years and upwards, and the Proportion per Cent. of Deaths from each Cause, in the Boroughs above given, registered during the Month of April, 1897.
