Rural Lands in the Canterbury Land District open for Sale or Selection.

IN pursuance and exercise of the powers and authorities conferred upon me by the one hundred and thirty-sixth section of "The Land Act, 1892," I, James Prendergast, the Administrator of the Government of the Colony of New Zealand, having received the report of the Surveyor-General in this behalf, as in the said section is provided, do hereby declare that the rural lands described in the Schedule hereto shall be open for sale or selection on and after the second day of June, one thousand eight hundred and ninety-seven; and also that the lands mentioned in the said Schedule may, at the option of the applicant, be purchased for cash, or be selected for occupation with right of purchase or on lease in perpetuity, or, in respect of any land containing or supposed to contain any metal, mineral, or valuable stone, be selected on lease in perpetuity only; and I do hereby also fix the prices at which the said lands shall be sold, occupied, or leased, as mentioned in the said Schedule hereto, and do declare that the said lands shall be sold, occupied, or leased under and subject to the provisions of "The Land Act, 1892."

This section is situated on the north side of the gorge of the Pareora River, about seven miles and a half south-westward from the Coal Creek Railway-station, on the Timaru-Fairlie branch line of railway, and comprises fairly smooth, well-grassed spurs, parts of which are capable of being ploughed. There is a steep rocky facing adjoining the Pareora River. The section is weighted with a sum of £137 1s., being valuation of two-roomed hut and boundary fencing, which sum must be paid on application, in addition to the usual deposit and fees.

This section is situated on the eastern slope of the Hunter's Hills, at the head-waters of the Makikihi River, and is distant about ten miles in a westerly direction from the railway-station of that name, with which it is connected by the Makikihi main road and branches therefrom. It comprises steep, open spurs of the Hunter's Hills, the vegetation on which consists principally of tussock and fern. The intersecting gullies contain considerable areas of bush. The section is weighted with a sum of £419 8s., being valuation of dwelling-house, woolshed, yards, and boundary and subdivision fencing, which sum must be paid on application, in addition to the usual deposit and fees.
