so inspected the whole or any of them, may direct that the
whole or any of them be brought for further trial to such
place as they may think fit.

The cost of bringing the machines or appliances on to the
ground, from within the county, suppling the necessary
shalting, motivc-powcr, and buildings, to be defrayed by the
Government. If any machine sent from beyond the county
is awarncd the bonus or part thereof, then the cost of
bringing such machine shall be borne by the Government.

The following shall be the basis of the test:-

The committee shall supply a sufficient and equal quan--
tity of green hcmp to each machine or process as a test.

The committee shall take into consicleration--

The time occu picd by each machine or process in the
operation;

The cost of lab our and time required after the fibre has
left the machine or process before it is ready for
baling;

The percentage of dresscd fibre and tow produced by
each machine or process;

The cost of produc ing the same;

The cost of the machine, and the simplicity and dura--
bility of the working parts.

On completion of the tests the committee shall furnish a
report to the Minister on all the machines or processes which
they have exanincd or tested, and shall state,-

(1.) The machine or process which they consider on the
whole the most efficient and economic.

(2.) Whether they consider that any machine or process
tested so materially re duces the cost of produc--
tior, or improves the product, as to be wort hy of
the whole bonus or of a part only.

(3.) Whether, in the event of no one machine or process
being entitl ed to the whole bonus, they deen any
machine or process worth y of a part of the bonus,
and, if so, how much.

Bon us No. 2.

A bonus of £250 is offered for a process of utilising the
waste products of the hcmp.

The first three conditions of Bon us No. 1 to apply to this
also.

The committee shall supply a sufficient and equal quantity
of the waste products to each process as a test.

On completion of the tests the committee shall report to
the Minister, and shall give the following particulars of each
process: (a.) The nature of the article made. (b.) The
quantity produced, and the cost of production. (c.) The
value of the product. (d.) Whether any of the processes are
of sufficient importance to warrant the Minister in giving
(1) the whole, or (2) any part, of the bonus; (3) if a part
only, how much.

BONUS for PRODUCING of Mineral Manure.—Notice No. 454.

Department of Agriculture,
Wellington, 25th July, 1896.

A BONUS of £200 is hercb y offered for the disco very and
working within the county of a dep osit or dep osits of
marketable min eral manure.

The following are the conditions under which the bonus
is offered and will be paid:-

  1. That the raw material be easily accessible, and within
    reasonable distance of a road or railway.

  2. That the person app ointed by the Minister for Agri cul--
    ture to exaninc the dep osit is sat isfied that there is sufficient
    to meet all ord inary dem ands for five years.

  3. That at least 200 t on s of such manure have been dis--
    posed of at a price which will allow of its being remunera--
    tively used for agric ultural purposes, and that a further
    supply can be placed on the market at the same price.

  4. That, if the dep osit be min eral coprolites, it shall con--
    tain by analysis at least 20 per cent. of ph osph oric acid.

  5. That, if the dep osit be min eral apatites, it shall contain
    by analysis at least 25 per cent. of ph osph oric acid.

F orce upon the New Zeal and G overnment R ailways.

IN pursuance of all powers and authorities en abling me
under "The Public W orks Act, 1894," and any am end--
ment thereof, and also of "The G overnment R ailways Act,
1894," I, A lfr ed J erome C adman, the Minister for R ailways,
do her eby make the following alterations in the sc al e of
f ares, rates, and charges in force on the New Zeal and G o--

v ernment railways open for traffic, such alterations to
come into force on and after the 1st day of April, 1897.

PART I.—PASSENGERS: GENERAL FARES AND REGULATI ONS.

TEACHERS'SATURDAY SEASON T ICK ETS.

  1. T each ers' Saturday tickets will be issued at the follow--
    ing rate per term, not exc eeding four months, or factional
    part of a term, for public-school teachers att ending Saturday
    tr aining-classes, or ex amin ations held in connection with
    s uch training-classes:-

First Class.

(a.) All owing teachers to travel to class or
ex amin ation on F riday and return on
Saturday . . . . . . . . . 30s.

(b.) All owing teachers to travel to class or
ex amin ation on Saturday and return
on Monday . . . . . . . . 30s.

(c.) All owing teachers to travel to class or
ex amin ation on Saturday and return
the same day . . . . . . 20s.

These tickets cannot be used unless the holder is proceed--
ing to or coming from the training-school or ex amin ation.
They will be issued conditionally on a roll of attendan ce
being kept at each training-school or ex amin ation-class held
in connection with such training-school, such roll to be open
for insp ection by any officer of the Railway Department
deput ed for that purpose.

App lication must be made in the following form, and
certifed to by the Secretary of the Education Board, before
a ticket will be issued:-

Education Board as teacher at District
School, and that I int end, during the session ending
, to att end the teachers' training-classes or University le cture s
at ; and I her eby request the Railway Department
to supply me with a teachers' Saturday season ticket, at

the purpose of att ending the said training-classes or le cture s
as ind or sed, and sub ject to the by-laws, rules, and regu--
lat ions in force on the New Zeal and Government railways ;
and I agr ee that the ticket shall be forf eited should I at any
time fail to observ e such by-laws, rules, and regulations, or
to fulf il this und ertaking.

EXCESS LUGGAGE.

Or dinary pass engers will be allow ed to take with them,
free of charge, 1121b. weight consis t ing either of bona fide
person al luggage, or any goods (except furniture and bul ky
muscial inst rum ent s) which they may purchase bona fide
for their own domestic use, but such goods will be con vey ed
at pass engers' own risk.

No luggage will be allow ed free to excursionists by day
trip, but excursionists trav elling by exc ursion s ext ending
over more than one day will be allow ed to take with them,
free of charge, 1121b. of bona fide personal luggage.

W orkpeople will be allow ed to take, at their own risk, any
work-t ools, or work which they do at their homes, up to
1121b. weight, free of charge.

In no case shall the aggr egat e weight carried free with
any pass enger exc eed 1121b.

For every 561b. or faction of 561b. abov e weight allow ed,
for ev ery 50 miles or faction of 50 miles the charge will
be 1s.

The department reser v es to itself the right to ref use any
articles which, from their bul ky or obj ectionable char acter,
it is inexp edient to carry as pass engers' luggage.

LOST LUGGAGE.

The platform will be clear ed after each train, and all pro--
p erty found will be treated as lost luggage, and if not claimed
within three months may be sold.

LEF T LUGGAGE.

Any luggage not claimed within three months may be sold.
