  • The remaining suburbs do not lie within borough boundaries, and particulars respecting them have not been obtained for the Vital Statistics.

Deaths occurring at hospitals, of persons not residents of the borough wherein the hospital is situated, have been allotted in each case to the borough where the disease was contracted, and not to that in which the death actually took place.

The total births in the above boroughs amounted to 346, against 363 in December, a decrease of 17. The deaths in January were 179, an increase of 33 on the number in December. Of the total deaths, males contributed 93, females 86. Sixty-seven of the deaths were of children under 5 years of age, being 37·43 per cent. of the whole number; 57 of these were under 1 year of age. There were 34 deaths of persons of 65 years and upwards: one man, 66, and five women, 69, 70 (two), 72, 82, died at Auckland; five men, 65, 67, 72, 73, 77, and two women, 69, 77, at Wellington; two men, 66, 83, and three women, 73, 74, 82, at Christchurch; and nine men, 65, 66, 67 (two), 70, 71, 76, 79, 86, and seven women, 67, 71, 75, 77, 78, 80, 84, at Dunedin.
