Notice of Vesting of Land in the Public Trus tee under "The
Unclained Lands Act, 1894.\"

W HERREAS I, the undemigned, the Public Trus tee, have,
for the purposes of "The Unclained Lands Act,
1894," made due inquirics with respect to the land described
int the Schedale hereunder written and the owner thereof,
and have, in respect of the said land, given the notices
preseibed by section 4 of the said Act, and have in all
respects complied with the provis ions of the said section:
And wherea I have not thoreby ascertained who the owner
ais, and believe that such owner is not in the col only, nor has
sach owner established his title to the said land, as required
by the said Act: I herebv give notice that the said land is,
under and by virtue of the said Act, vosted in me, as the
Public Trus tee as aforesaid, as from the date of the publica-
tio there of, and will be administered under the said Act,
the asseesed value of the said land being less than £100.
Dated at Wellington, this 3rd day of December, 1897.

ALL that parce of land, containing by admeasurment
41 acr es, more or less, having a frontage of about 10 chain
to the Main Tatarariki Road and a depth of 50 chain to the
Tatarariki C reek, known by survey definition as the south-
eastern portion of Section 3 of the Parish of Tatarariki,
Provincial District of Auckland.

A N exa mination of candidates for certi ficate as First-
and Second class Min e- Mana gers and Battery-super-
intendents under "The Min ing Act, 1891," and A mendment
Act, 1894, and First- and Second-class Min e-mana gers under
"The Co al-mines Act, 1891," will be held on Tuesday, the
25th January, 1898, and three following days, at places to
be hereafter named. All applications, with necessary
certi ficate, and fee of £1, must be add res sed to "The
Secretary of the Board of Examiners under the Min ing Act
or Co al-mines Act, Wellington," and must be received
before the 4th January, or they will not be de alt with until
the following exa mination.

B onuses for Encouragement of New Zeal and Hemp (Phor-
mium tenax) Indus try.—Notice No. 430.

B onus No. 1.

A BONUS of £1,750 is offered for a machine or process
for dress ing New Zeal and h emp (Phormium tenax)
which shall be an improvement on the machines or processes
now in use, and which shall, after trial, be found to ma te-
rially reduce the cost of production, improve the product, or
in crease the quantity of dress ed fibre.
The following are the conditions:—

  1. All applications for the bonus must be sent add res sed
    to the H on. the Minister for Agriculture, Wellington and
    mu st reach him not later than the 31st December, 1897.
    Each application must be accom panied by a description of the
    ma chine or process, particularly stat ing improv ements on
    pre sent machines or processes, and also the cost at which
    the machine or process can be supply.
  2. The applica nts must be prepared to submit their
    ma chines or processes to exa mination at such time and
    place as the Government may direct.
  3. The Government shall appoint a committee of three or
    more experts, to whom all applications shall be submitted.
    Su ch committee shall, after perusal, state what machines or
    processes they de em wor th y of considera tio n, and may in-
    s pect the same at any place within the col only: and, having
    so inspected the whole or any of them, may direct that the
    whol e or any of them be brought for further trial to such
    place as they may think fit.
    The cost of bringing the machines or appliances on to the
    ground, from within the col only, supply ing the necessary
    shafting, moti ve-p ower, and buildings, to be defrayed by the
    Government. If any machine sent from beyond the col only
    is award ed the bonus or part thereof, then the cost of
    br inging such machine shall be borne by the Government.
    The following shall be the basis of the test:—
    The committee shall supply a sufficient and equal quan-
    tity of green h emp to each machine or process as a test.
    The committee shall take into considera tio n—
    The time occup ied by each machine or process in the
    operation;
    The cost of la bour and time required after the fibre has
    left the machine or process before it is ready for
    baling;
    The percentage of dress ed fibre and tow produced by
    each machine or process;
    The cost of produc ing the same;
    The cost of the machine, and the simplicity and dura-
    bility of the working parts.
    On completion of the tests the committee shall furn ish a
    report to the Minister on all the machines or processes which
    th ey have exa min ed or tested, and shall state,—
    (1.) The machine or process which they consider on the
    whole the most efficient and economic.
    (2.) Whether they consider that any machine or process
    tested so materially reduc es the cost of produc-
    tio n, or improves the product, as to be wor th y of
    the whole bonus or of a part only.
    (3.) Whether, in the event of no one machine or process
    being entit led to the whole bonus, they de em any
    machine or process wor th y of a part of the bonus,
    and, if so, how much.
    B onus No. 2.

A bonus of £250 is offered for a process of utilising the
waste products of the h emp.
The first three conditions of B onus No. 1 to apply to this
al so.
The committee shall supply a sufficient and equal quantity
of the waste products to each process as a test.
On completion of the tests the committee shall report to
the Minister, and shall give the following particulars of each
process: (a.) The nature of the article made. (b.) The
quantity produced, and the cost of production. (c.) The
value of the product. (d.) Whether any of the processes are
of sufficient importance to warrant the Minister in giving
(1) the whole, or (2) any part, of the bonus; (3) if a part
only, how much.
