provided by the Mairne Department, but the applicanits
will have to bring with them any drawing instrunents they
nay require.
Punishment for breaking rules.
- In the event of any candidate being discovered copyinig
from another, or affording any assistance or giving any infoi-ma
to another, or communi eating in any way with
anot her during the time of exanunation, he will be regai'ded
as having failed in his exanunation, and will be turned back
for three months, in the same manner as if he had failed in
the practical part of the exanunation ; and no part of the
fees he may have paid for exanunation will be returned to
him. This penalty also ap plies to any breath of par. 44.
Leaving exanunation-rom.
- If a candidate leaves the room before answering any
question which has been given to him, he cannot afterwai'ds
be permitted to answer it, but the examiner may substittite
other data, or another question.
Quotations from Form Exn. 15a.
-
All applicanits preseniting themselves for exanunation
will be required to give written answers to ten questions
selected from Form Exn. 15a, " Elementary Ques tions for
the First Examinations of Engin eers for Cert ifi cates of Com-petency, and of Masters and Mates for Cert ifi cates in Steain. "
These questions are intended to furn ish a record to some
extenit of the candidate's knowledge at the time of his
exanunation, and also to induee the candidates to pay more
attention to their handwriting and spell ing. -
The Form Exn. 15b, on which these answers will be
wri tten, contains also some questions as to the experience of
the applicanit, to be ans wered by him in writing. -
Examiners may add to their viva voce questions on the
practical managemenit of stearn-engines and boi lers any of
those contained in Exn. 15a. -
If at the expira tio n of the time allowed the candidate
has worked out and answ ered correctly the whole of the
qu estions set to him, and given satisfactory answers in
the viva voce exanunation, he will be declared to have
passed. -
If at the expira tio n of the time allowed he has not
w ork ed out the whole of the questions set to him, but if the
result of the viva voce exanunation taken in connection with
the answers to such of the questions as he has worked out
are sufficient to satis fy the examiner that the applicanit is
conipetent, he will be declared to have passed. -
In other cases he will be declared to have failed.
Exn. 15.
- A report of the exanunation, and the exanunation-pap ers, will be forwarded to the Mairne Department on the
Form Exn. 15.
Not ificati on of having passed will be given to successful candi-dates.—Exn. 16.
- If the candidate passes he will receive the Form
Exn. 16, which authorises the Superintenident of the Mer can-til e Mairne Office to which it is add res sed by the examiner to
issue the certificate to the candidate, whose testimonials,
&c., will be returned at the same time. It is therefore im-
portant that the port of destination of the certificate should
be the same on both the Form Exn. 16 and the Form Exn. 3.
If circumstances should make any altera tio n necessary, the
examiner should see that it is made in both forms, otherwise
d elay in the issue of the certificate may be caused.
FAILURE.
Re-exanunation in case of failure.
- If the applicanit for a first- or second-class certificate
fails in practical knowledge he may not present himself for
re-exanunation until he can produce proo fs of three months'
further service at sea as an engine er from the date of failure.
If he fails in arithmetic or drawing only, he may come up
again at any time. If a candidate for a third-class cert ifi-cate fails to pass he may not present himself for re-exami-nation until after the expira tio n of one month.
RULES FOR THE EXAMINATION OF RIVEE EN GINEEES AND
MARINE-EN GINE D EIVEES.
General.
-
Candidates for exanunation must make a proper ap-plication on a form which will be supp li ed on application at
any Customhouse. This application, accompan i ed by the
necessary testimonials, must be lodg ed at the Customhouse
for delivery to the examiners. Certifi cates procured on false
inforination will be can celled. -
Engin e er.—An engine er of a steamer ply ing within
re stricted limits must be tw enty- one years of age, and must

hav e been emp loyed about the ma ch inery or boi lers of a
steamer, or in driving ma ch inery and having charge of the
boiler of a land-engine, for at least one year, or produce
satisfactory proo f of having served five years at the making
and repair ing of engin es, and having been emp loyed about
the ma ch inery or boi lers of a steamer or in driving ma ch inery
and having charge of the boi l er of a land-engine, for at least
six months. He must produce satisfactory testimonials of
good conduct and sobriety.
(a.) He must be able to read and write, must under-stand the first five rules of arithmetic, and ques-tions rela t ing to the consumption of coal and
sto res, the capacity of btm kers, and calculate the
p ress u re on the safety-va lve.
(b.) He must understand the use of the salinom eter and
vacu u m- and stearn-ga u ges.
He must understand how to keep the boi l er free
from incrustation, and the method of regulating
the den sity of the water in the boi l er.
(d.) He must be able to state how a temporary repair
coul d be effected in case of derangement of
ma ch inery or boi l er.
(e.) He must pass a creditable exanunation as to the
constru cti on and details of the different parts of
any engine used in stearn ers plying within re-strict ed limits, and give an explanation of the use
of each part.
(f.) He must be able to give a satisfactory description of
the construction of the different kinds of boi l ers
in general use in stearn ers plying within restrictecl
li mits, and must explain the use and manage-ment of the feed- and safety-va lves, brine-coc k s,
and all connections.
- M arine-engine Driver.—A ma rine-engine driver can act
as an engine er of a stearn ship plying only within ha rbour s,
rivers, and lak es, or other inla nd navigable wa ters, and
which is fi tted with non-conden sing ma ch inery, the area of
cyl inder or combined area of cylin ders of propelling ma ch i-
nery of which does not exceed 200 circu la r inches.
(a.) He must be tw enty- one years of age, and must have
be en emp loyed about the ma ch inery and boi l ers
of a stearn er, or in driving ma ch inery and having
charge of the boi l er of a land-engine, for at least
six months, or produce satisfactory proo f of ha v-ing served five years at the making and repair ing
of engin es.
(b.) He must produce satisfactory testimonials of good
con du c t and sobriety. He must be able to read,
write, and understand the first five rules of arith-metic.
(c.) He must understand the use of the salinom eter and
stearn-ga u ge.
(d.) He must understand how to keep the boi l er free

F ailures.

- The fee to be paid by the applicanits for exanunation is
fl, of which 10s. will be returned to any applicanit who may
fa il to pass.
N ote.—Time served in stearn ers plying within restrictecl
li mits and within ha rbour s, &c., does not count as service at
sea for the purpose of obta ining a certificate of competency
for a sea-going ship.
