In the first table are given the deaths and death-rates for each of the four cities, for the suburban boroughs severally, and for each city with its suburban towns. As regards Auckland and Christchurch, the whole of the area usually recognised as suburban has not yet been brought under municipal government, and the vital statistics do not deal with such portions as still remain in road districts. But the omission is not very important, for there are in either case quite enough suburbs included within borough boundaries to give a fair idea of the death-rate of Greater Auckland and Greater Christchurch. As further boroughs are formed the vital statistics will be made to include them.
The inclusion of the suburban boroughs tends to lower the death-rate for last month at Auckland, Wellington, and Dunedin, but raises it at Christchurch. The rates for August are,—
Auckland City .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. 0·99
,, and five suburban boroughs .. .. .. .. 0·96
Wellington City .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. 1·18
,, and three suburban boroughs .. .. .. .. 1·05
Christchurch City .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. 0·77
,, and four suburban boroughs .. .. .. .. 0·99
Dunedin City .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. 0·75
,, and eight suburban boroughs .. .. .. .. 0·70
Including the suburbs, the rate at Wellington is the highest, and at Dunedin the lowest. Compared with August, 1895, the results are,—
| August, 1895. | August, 1896. | |
|---|---|---|
| Auckland and suburbs | 1·26 | 0·96 |
| Wellington and suburbs | 1·47 | 1·05 |
| Christchurch and suburbs | 0·90 | 0·99 |
| Dunedin and suburbs .. | 0·88 | 0·70 |
Specific Febrile and Zymotic Diseases.—The number of deaths in August at the four cities and their suburbs was 15, against 9 in July. Of the deaths during last month one was from influenza, and another from typhoid fever, at Auckland; 2 from diphtheria, at Wellington; and 2 from whooping-cough, at Dunedin. There were also 5 deaths from diarrhœa—1 at Auckland, 2 at Wellington, and 2 at Christchurch. These, with 1 death from intestinal catarrh, 2—of children under five years—from hereditary syphilis, and 1 from septicaemia, complete the total.
Parasitic Diseases.—The death of a female at Dunedin from cyst of hydatids in the liver is observed.
Constitutional Diseases.—The deaths in August (37) were fewer than those in July (49). Phthisis caused 18, tuberculosis and tubercular meningitis 4 deaths. The mortality from cancer comprised 10 deaths, the seat of the disease being the stomach, liver, lungs, heart, rectum, bladder, and womb. There was 1 death from diabetes mellitus.
Local Diseases.—The mortality fell from 91 deaths in July to 80 in August. 21 deaths were attributable to nervous diseases, including 6 from apoplexy and 5 from convulsions. There were 18 deaths from diseases of the circulatory system, and 25 from diseases of the respiratory system, the latter including 12 cases of bronchitis and 7 of pneumonia. There were also 7 deaths from diseases of the digestive system, 1 from disease of the lymphatic system, 7 of the urinary system (6 Bright's disease), and 1 from disease of the reproductive system.
Violent Deaths.—Six were accidental and 4 suicidal. A bricklayer fractured his skull by falling from a scaffold, a plumber was accidentally drowned, and a girl scalded to death; an infant was accidentally suffocated in bed, and two others died from umbilical hæmorrhage. A widow committed suicide by cutting her throat, a miner poisoned himself with strychnine, another male with oxalic acid, and a woman by taking spirits of salts.
