Deaths occurring at hospitals, of persons not residents of the borough wherein the hospital is situated, have been allotted in each case to the borough where the disease was contracted, and not to that in which the death actually took place.

The total births in the above boroughs amounted to 367, against 375 in July, a decrease of 8. The deaths in August were 160, a decrease of 11 on the number in July. Of the total deaths, males contributed 90, females 70. Forty-six of the deaths were of children under 5 years of age, being 28·75 per cent. of the whole number; 37 of these were under 1 year of age. There were 37 deaths of persons of 65 years and upwards: six men, 65, 66 (two), 71, 74, 80, and five women, 66, 68, 74, 76, 77, died at Auckland; four men, 68, 74 (two), 78, and one woman, 71, at Wellington; eleven men 65, 68 (three), 73 (two), 80 (two), 82 (two), 95, and six women, 67, 70, 72, 77 (two), 78, at Christchurch; and two men, 66, 80, and two women, 76, 79, at Dunedin.
