Proposed Alterations in Boundaries of Electoral Districts, Middle Island.

Wellington, 12th August, 1896.

THE Commissioners for the Middle Island appointed under “The Representation Act Amendment Act, 1896,” and in accordance with the provisions of “The Representation Act, 1887,” and the amendments thereof, hereby publish for general information, in terms of section 4 of the last-named Act, the following proposed alterations in the boundaries of electoral districts; and, further, give notice that written objections to the same will be received at the office of the Middle Island Commission, care of the Chief Surveyor, Christchurch, up to and including the 14th September, 1896.

Maps of the proposed districts will be furnished to each local body in the colony, and may also be seen at the Chief Surveyor’s Offices at Nelson, Blenheim, Christchurch, Dunedin, Hokitika, and Invercargill.

ELECTORAL DISTRICTS, MIDDLE ISLAND.

Nelson comprises the Wangamoa, Stoke, and Moutere Ridings of Waimea County; the Waimea West Road District of Waimea County; the City of Nelson; the Borough of Richmond; and that portion of Wai-iti Riding of Waimea County situated east of the road at the western boundary of Section 40, about one mile and a quarter south of Brightwater Railway-station, and between the railway-line and the Wai-iti.

Motueka comprises the County of Collingwood; the Karamea Riding of Buller County; the Motueka, Wangapeka, and Motupiko Ridings of Waimea County; and the whole of Wai-iti Riding of Waimea County, excepting the Waimea West Road District portion and that portion lying between the railway and the Wai-iti east of the road fronting the western boundary of Section 40, which is included in the Nelson electorate hereinbefore described.

Buller comprises the whole of Inangahua County, less Antonio’s Riding; the Ridings of Lyell, Wareatea North, and Wareatea South, of Buller County; and the Borough of Westport.

Grey comprises the whole of Grey County, excepting the Ridings of Hohonu and Marsden; together with Antonio’s Riding of Inangahua County, Charleston Riding of Buller County, and the Boroughs of Greymouth and Brunner.

Westland comprises the whole of Westland County; the Hohonu and Marsden Ridings of Grey County; and the Boroughs of Hokitika, Kumara, and Ross.

Wairau comprises Sounds County; the Ridings of Pelorus, Picton, and Spring Creek, of Marlborough County; the Boroughs of Picton and Blenheim; and the Town District of Havelock; together with those portions of Wairau Riding of Marlborough County lying north-west of the Wairau River and south-east of a line commencing at the Wairau River, and following that river up to the Avon River; and thence following the Avon River to its source; also the whole of the Omaka Riding of Marlborough County, less that portion lying between the mudflats in the Wairau Estuary and the Awatere River, and east of a line drawn south from Vernon Homestead. This district includes Stephens, the Brothers, and adjacent islands.

Ashley comprises the Counties of Kaikoura, Amuri, and Cheviot; the Ridings of Waipara, Kowai, and Mount Thomas, of Ashley County; together with the Awatere Riding of Marlborough County, and that portion of Wairau Riding of Marlborough County lying between the Wairau River and the Waihopai and Avon Rivers; the easternmost portion of the Omaka Riding, between the mudflats and the Awatere River, and bounded on the west by a line proceeding generally south from Vernon Homestead; and that portion of the Oxford Riding of Ashley County within the boundaries of the existing Ashley Electoral District. Amberley Town District is in this electorate.

Kaiapoi comprises the Cust, West Eyreton, and Mandeville Ridings of Ashley County; the portion of Oxford Riding of Ashley County within the existing Kaiapoi Electoral District; the whole of Eyreton Riding of Ashley County less that portion east of Waimakariri Road and south of the Eyre Road, south-west of the existing Kaiapoi Electoral District; together with the Boroughs of Kaiapoi and Rangiora.

Riccarton comprises the whole of Riccarton Road District less Hagley Park; the whole of Templeton Road District; that portion of Halswell Riding of Selwyn County lying west
