*The remaining suburbs do not lie within borough boundaries, and particulars respecting them have not been obtained for the
Vital Statistics.
Deaths occurring at hospitals, of persons not residents of the borough wherein the hospital is situated, have been
allotted in each case to the borough where the disease was contracted, and not to that in which the death actually took
place.
The total births in the above boroughs amounted to 334, against 377 in April, a decrease of 43. The deaths in
May were 150, a decrease of 22 on the number in April. Of the total deaths, males contributed 72; females, 78.
Forty-two of the deaths were of children under 5 years of age, being 28 per cent. of the whole number; 33 of these were
under 1 year of age. There were 31 deaths of persons of 65 years and upwards: six men, 65 (two), 74, 78, 86 (two), and
four women, 75, 80 (two), 81, died at Auckland; one man, 75, and four women, 68, 73, 76, 78, at Wellington; five men, 70,
75, 76 (two), and two women, 65, 82, at Christchurch; and four men, 71, 77, 81, 82, and six women, 65, 66 (two), 69, 74 (two),
at Dunedin.
THE following Table shows the Causes of the Deaths of Persons of both Sexes under 5 Years of Age and 5 Years
and upwards, and the Proportions per Cent. of Deaths from each Cause, in the Boroughs above given, registered
during the Month of May, 1896.
