Vital Statistics, December, 1895.

REGISTRAR-GENERAL'S Report on the Vital Statistics of the Principal Towns of New Zealand during the Month of December, 1895:—

RETURN of the Number of Births, with the Actual Mortality of Males and Females, and the Proportion of Deaths to Population, in the under-mentioned Boroughs, during the Month of December, 1895.

The remaining suburbs do not lie within borough boundaries, and particulars respecting them have not been obtained for the Vital Statistics.

Deaths occurring at hospitals have been omitted, except where deceased had previously resided in one or other of the above boroughs, in which case the death is counted against the borough of residence.

The total births in the above boroughs amounted to 344, against 325 in November, an increase of 19. The deaths in December were 127, an increase of 1 on the number in November. Of the total deaths, males contributed 74, females 53. Thirty-four of the deaths were of children under 5 years of age, being 26.77 per cent. of the whole number; 26 of these were under 1 year of age. There were 22 deaths of persons of 65 years and upwards: Two men of 70 and 72 died at Auckland; six men of 68, 73, 76, 78, 84, 86, at Wellington; five men of 70 (two), 73, 77, 80, and five women of 66, 68, 78, 83, 87, at Christchurch; four men of 65, 67, 71, 78, at Dunedin.

THE following Table shows the Causes of the Deaths of Persons of both Sexes under 5 Years of Age and 5 Years and upwards, and the Proportions per Cent. of Deaths from each Cause, in the Boroughs above given registered during the Month of December, 1895.
