"The Agricultural and Pastoral Statistics Act, 1895."—Returns for 1895–96.
Department of Agriculture, Wellington, N.Z., 26th March, 1895.
THE following figures show the actual acreages under the several headings, and the number of bushels of grain, &c., on hand; also the number of horses, cattle, swine, and sheep. The particulars cover the period from February to December, 1895.
The actual threshing yields of a few of the representative crops in each district are now being collected, from which an estimate of the total yield will be obtained.
It will be seen that each crop is taken under several headings—viz., for threshing, ensilage, feeding down with stock, and for chaffing; therefore the acreage actually reaped for human consumption may appear relatively less than in former years.
The Maori returns are included, but, as it is the first time any attempt has been made to get individual returns, some difficulty was experienced.
The returns of stock include those in cities and boroughs as well as country districts.
No comparison can very well be made with the figures for former years, as the returns are now taken under a much greater number of headings.
JOHN D. RITCHIE,
Secretary.
