Infantry Volunteer Battalion formed in Canterbury District.

Wellington, 19th October, 1895.

HIS Excellency the Governor has been pleased to ap-
prove, under paragraphs 211 and 213, Volunteer
Regulations, 1895, of the formation of the under-mentioned
Volunteer corps in the Canterbury District into an infantry
battalion, under the designation of the "Canterbury Bat-
talion of Infantry Volunteers," with effect from the 8th
October, 1895 :—

Timaru Naval Artillery Volunteers (acting as infantry
for the time being),
Canterbury Engineer Volunteers (acting as infantry for
the time being),
Christchurch City Guards Rifle Volunteers,
Temuka Rifle Volunteers,
Ashburton Rifle Volunteers,
Christ's College Rifle Volunteers,
Christchurch City Rifle Volunteers,
Timaru Rifle Volunteers,
Kaiapoi Rifle Volunteers,
Waimate Rifle Volunteers,
Rangiora Rifle Volunteers;

and to appoint

Major FREDERICK WYATT FRANCIS, New Zealand Volun-
teers,

to the command of the battalion, with the rank of Lieu-
tenant-Colonel, and with the following staff :—

Adjutant—Lieutenant FREDERICK WILLIAM SANDFORD,
New Zealand Volunteers.
Surgeon-Captain—EDWARD JENNINGS.

Act, 1886."

PAHIATUA COUNTY.

Result of poll, proposed loan No. 40, Kaitawa Ridge and
other roads:—

The following is the result of a poll taken on the 7th
October, 1895, on a proposal to borrow £1,500, under "The
Government Loans to Local Bodies Act, 1886," to form and
metal a portion of the Kaitawa Ridge Road, the Mount
Marchant Road, the Puketoi Road, and the Pori Road :—
Number of ratepayers on special roll, 13, representing 13
votes: Number of ratepayers who voted for the proposal, 8;
votes unrecorded, 5.
I therefore declare the proposal carried.

Result of poll, proposed loan No. 48, roads to Matarua
Creamery:—
The following is the result of a poll taken on the 15th
October, 1895, on a proposal to borrow £2,000, under "The
Government Loans to Local Bodies Act, 1886," to form and
metal certain roads leading to the Matarua Creamery :—
Number of ratepayers on special roll, 44, representing 47
votes: Number of ratepayers who voted for the proposal,
30, representing 31 votes; informal vote recorded, 1; votes
not recorded, 15.
I therefore declare the proposal carried.

Result of Poll for Proposed Loan, Lower Wairau River Board,
County of Marlborough.

THE following notice, received from the Chairman of the
Lower Wairau River Board, is published in accordance
with the provisions of "The Local Bodies' Loans Act, 1886."

LOWER WAIRAU RIVER BOARD.

The following is the result of a poll taken on the 15th
October, 1895, on the proposal to raise a loan of £12,000 for
flood relief works :—
Number of voters, 547, exercising 796 votes: Voted for
proposal, 222 voters, exercising 369 votes; against proposal,
39 voters, exercising 68 votes; informal, 8 voters, exercising
11 votes; total, 269 voters, exercising 448 votes.
As the number of voters and votes recorded in favour of
the proposal does not amount to more than one-half of the
number that can be exercised by the whole number of rate-
payers, I hereby declare the proposal rejected.

Special Order made by the Manganui Road Board, County
of Stratford.

THE following special order, made by the Manganui
Road Board, is published in accordance with the pro-
visions of "The Road Boards Act, 1882."

MANGANUI ROAD BOARD.

Notice is hereby given that the following special order
was made on Saturday, 7th September, 1895, and confirmed
on Saturday, 12th October, 1895 :—
"That, to secure the repayment of a loan of £830 under
'The Government Loans to Local Bodies Act, 1886,' for
the purpose of forming and metalling the Croydon Road
from the Mountain Road eastwards; to pay out of such
loan the cost of raising it; to strike as security on this
loan a special rate of 1½d. in the pound over the following
lands—namely, Sections 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, part 7 (66 acres), 8, 9,
10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, Block IX., Huiroa Survey District.
Such rate to be an annually-recurring rate for twenty-six
years, and shall be payable in two half-yearly instalments
on the 1st of January and the 1st of July in each year."
I hereby certify that the above special order was duly
made in accordance with "The Road Boards Act, 1882."

Importation of Swine from New Zealand into the Colony of
Victoria prohibited.—Notice No. 428.

Department of Agriculture (Live-stock Branch),
Wellington, 18th October, 1895.

NOTICE has been received from the Government of
Victoria that a Proclamation has been issued pro-
hibiting the importation of swine from New Zealand into
that colony for an indefinite period.
