In the first table are given the deaths and death-rates for each of the four cities, for the suburban boroughs severally, and for each city with its suburban towns. As regards Auckland and Christchurch, the whole of the area usually recognised as suburban has not yet been brought under municipal government, and the vital statistics do not deal with such portions as still remain in road districts. But the omission is not very important, for there are in either case quite enough suburbs included within borough boundaries to give a fair idea of the death-rate of Greater Auckland and Greater Christchurch. As further boroughs are formed the vital statistics will be made to include them.

By including the suburban boroughs the death-rate for last month is lowered at Auckland, Wellington, and Dunedin, but raised at Christchurch. The rates for June are,—

Death-rate per 1,000 of Population.
Auckland City .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. 1·05
" and five suburban boroughs .. .. .. 0·96
Wellington City .. .. .. .. .. .. .. 1·08
" and three suburban boroughs .. .. .. 1·03
Christchurch City .. .. .. .. .. .. 0·57
" and four suburban boroughs .. .. .. 0·62
Dunedin City .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. 1·35
" and eight suburban boroughs .. .. .. 0·94

Including suburbs, the rate at Wellington is the highest and that of Christchurch the lowest.

Specific Febrile and Zymotic Diseases.—The deaths in June at the four chief towns and suburbs numbered 18: 6 at Auckland, 5 at Wellington, 4 at Christchurch, and 3 at Dunedin. Influenza was the most fatal disease in this class, accounting for 3 deaths at Auckland, 1 at Wellington, 2 at Christchurch, and 1 at Dunedin. Diphtheria caused 5 deaths: 3 at Auckland, 1 at Wellington, and 1 at Christchurch. There was only 1 death from typhoid fever (at Christchurch), and 1 from diarrhœa (at Dunedin). Syphilis contributed 2 deaths, erysipelas and puerperal peritonitis, 1 each.

Constitutional Diseases.—The deaths fell from 42 in May to 33 in June. Of these, 23 were attributed to tubercular diseases (phthisis 18), and 8 to cancer. Diabetes caused 2 deaths.

Local Diseases.—Of 73 deaths at the four centres, 15 were from diseases of the nervous system (apoplexy 5, paralysis 4); 13 from diseases of the circulatory system (all diseases of the heart); 24 from diseases of the respiratory system (bronchitis, pneumonia, &c.); 13 from diseases of the digestive system; 5 from diseases of the urinary system (all Bright's disease); and 3 from diseases of the reproductive system.

Violence.—There were 8 deaths by accident in June. A letter-carrier was killed by tumbling down a recess at a post-office; a driver by falling from his tram-car; a butcher, a girl of 11, and a boy of 3 years were accidentally burnt; a mariner lost his life from renal lead-poisoning; an infant was suffocated by bedclothes; and a farmer, 76 years old, died from shock after being knocked down by a dray. The suicides were two, both cases of temporary insanity: A woman drowned herself in a well, and a night-porter hanged himself.
