the proper side of the road, as laid down in by-law No. 8, and
stop such engine while such vehicle, or cart, or wagon, or
person riding is passing, and shall give any aid that may be
necessary to the driver of such vehicle, or cart, or wagon, or
person riding.

  1. Traction-engines, portable engines, combines, elevators,
    reapers-and-binders (except reapers-and-binders on their own
    carriages), or other machines, whether agricultural or other-
    wise exceeding 11ft. in breadth, shall not be taken over any
    bridge except between the hours of sunrise and sunset, and
    subject to the following conditions: That before such traction-
    engine, portable engine, combine, elevator, reaper-and-binder,
    or other machine begins to cross the bridge the owner or per-
    son in charge thereof shall station a man at the other end with
    a flag as a danger signal to drivers of vehicles or horsemen who
    may be approaching.

  2. Any traction-engine, portable engine, or any machine
    exceeding 5 tons in weight crossing any culvert or bridge
    whatsoever shall do so at the owner’s risk.

  3. Every traction-engine whilst crossing a bridge shall be
    moved at a uniform rate of speed, which shall not exceed two
    miles an hour.

  4. All horses crossing a bridge which are not led or driven
    in harness, and all cattle, sheep, goats, pigs, mules, and donkeys,
    must have a man behind them. Cattle and horses in mobs
    must also have a man in front.

  5. Drays and wagons, with or without springs, and used for
    the carrying of timber, wood, agricultural produce, wool, flax,
    goods, or merchandise, shall not travel at a greater pace than a
    walk whilst crossing a bridge.

  6. Every person who shall propel or cause to be propelled
    any traction or other engine, or machine of any description, on
    or over any of the bridges within the boundaries of the road
    district, and shall thereby injure or damage any such bridge,
    shall be guilty of an offence; and shall also bear all the cost of
    repairing any damage occasioned to any such bridges by pro-
    pelling the same upon or over any of the said bridges.

  7. Every person who shall do, or cause or procure to be
    done, or be knowingly concerned in doing anything contrary to
    or otherwise than as provided by any of these by-laws, or who
    shall omit to do anything hereinbefore required to be done by
    him, shall be deemed guilty of an offence.

  8. Every person guilty of an offence against any of these
    by-laws shall be liable for such offence to a penalty not exceed-
    ing £5, as the Court inflicting the same shall in its discretion
    think fit, and, in every case where such offence shall be a con-
    tinuing one, to a further penalty not exceeding £5, as such
    Court shall think fit, for every day or part of a day during
    which such offence shall be continued.

Proposed Reduction of Rate of Interest paid by Napier Savings-bank.

IT is hereby notified that at a general meeting to be held
in the month of January, 1895, the Trustees of the
Napier Savings-bank intend to reduce the rate of interest
on deposits from 5 per cent. to 4 per cent. per annum.

PORT PHILLIP BAY.

REFERRING to Notice to Mariners dated 24th June, 1889, it
is hereby notified that on and after Monday, the 24th inst.,
the Cape Verde wreck signals will be exhibited from a wreck-
marking vessel moored about one cable’s length off the west
side of the wreck.

PILOT SERVICE, MORETON BAY.—AMENDED LIMITS OF
CRUISING-GROUND.

WITH reference to Notice to Mariners No. 18, issued on the
27th October, 1892, further notice is hereby given that the
outer limits of the pilot vessels’ cruising-ground at the
northern entrance to Moreton Bay, as therein defined, have
been extended to the northward and eastward.

The cruising-ground is therefore now defined as follows:
Inside an imaginary line drawn from Cape Cliff N. by E. ¾ E.
(Mount Tempest in line with Cape Cliff), seven and three-
quarters miles; thence to the Fairway Buoy at the entrance
to the North Channel; thence along the eastern edge of the
East and Venus Banks to the outer entrance to Freeman
Channel; thence to Cape Moreton.

ADDITIONAL LIGHTS, CAPE MORETON AND NORTH POINT,
MORETON ISLAND, CLEARING SMITH ROCK.

NOTICE is hereby given that on and after the 15th October
the following lights will be exhibited to assist in marking
the fairway between Cape Moreton and Smith Rock:—

North Point Hummock.—A small light in a square light-
room, painted white, on the summit of the hummock, show-
ing a sector of white light to the eastward between the
bearings of S. 54° W. and S. 82° W., visible about seven
miles.

Secondary Light, Cape Moreton.—Bearing N. 18° E., and
distant 180yd. from the main light. This light in line with
the main light indicates the direction of Smith Rock.

Directions.—Vessels passing between Smith Rock and
Moreton Island must cross the line of lights at Cape Moreton
whilst in the sector of white light shown from North Point
Hummock.
