Notice of Request to amend Specification.

Patent Office,
Wellington, 2nd August, 1894.

A REQUEST to be allowed to amend the specification relating to the under-mentioned application for Letters Patent has been received, and is open to public inspection at this office. Any person may, at any time within one month from the date of this Gazette, give me notice in writing of opposition to the amendment. Such notice must set forth the particular grounds of objection, and be in duplicate. A fee of 10s. is payable thereon:—

No. 6864.—19th May, 1894.—ALFRED LIARDET MACDONALD, of Brunswick, Wanganui, New Zealand, Farmer. An invention for improved sheep-brand.

The nature of the proposed amendments is as follows, viz.:—

  1. By inserting, in brackets, immediately after the word “centre,” in the fourth line of the claim, the words, “The spring may be encased in bars or a tube.”
  2. By inserting, in brackets, immediately after the word “spring,” in the seventh line of the claim, the words, “will either expand or contract as may be desired.”

The applicant states, as his reason for desiring to amend the specification, that “in getting some of my sheep-brands made it was found advisable to enclose the spring in a tube, so that the brand would be more firm, and the spring would not become clogged with dirt.”

C. J. A. HASELDEN,
Registrar of Patents, Designs, and Trade-marks.

No. 6682.—14th February, 1894.—EDWIN CUTHBERT, of Avonside, Christchurch, New Zealand, a Member of the Institution of Civil Engineers. An invention for an improved disconnecting gully-trap.

The nature of the proposed amendments is as follows, viz.:—

  1. By striking out the words forming the first part of the claim—viz., “That the branch pipe to which the soil-pipe is attached is set at such an angle with the upright portion of the trap that the contents of the closet is shot direct into the standing water of the trap. This insures that the entire standing contents of the trap, which only measures a little over half a gallon, is changed at each flush, and it also insures that the trap will be self-cleansing. Further, it prevents the excreta being splashed against the upright portion of the trap, where it remains and becomes offensive in traps whose branch pipes are set at right-angles to the upright portion (such as Buchan's).”
  2. By inserting after the word “gully,” at the end of the claim, the words: “And, further, that, where a bath-waste or flushing-pipe empty itself or themselves over the trap, there will be a more rapid discharge of same through the trap, whereby the branch connection becomes more thoroughly flushed. The trap is also constructed to hold as small a quantity of standing water as is consistent with efficiency, thus insuring that its contents will be totally changed at each flush of the closet.”

The applicant gives as his reasons for desiring to amend the specification that—

“Seeing that a portion of the claim—viz., the angle at which the soil-pipe branch is set with the upright portion of the trap—was part of a claim of a former application (No. 1795), which has lapsed and cannot now be repatented, I abandon that portion of the claim, and now claim that the upright pipe of the trap is enlarged at the top, or made bell-mouthed, so that the aggregate area of the holes in the cast-iron plate is equal to the area of a four-inch-diameter pipe-plate, thus insuring a full current of fresh air through the soil-pipe; and also, that, where a bath-waste or flushing-pipe empty itself or themselves over the trap, there will be a more rapid discharge of the same through the trap, whereby the branch connection becomes more thoroughly flushed. The trap is also constructed to hold as small a quantity of standing water as is consistent with efficiency, thus insuring that its contents will be totally changed at each flush of the closet.”

C. J. A. HASELDEN,
Registrar of Patents, Designs, and Trade-marks.
